Viral gastroenteritis
Med Mal Infect. 1987 Nov;17(11):618-625. doi: 10.1016/S0399-077X(87)80114-2. Epub 2005 Jun 2.ABSTRACTMany virus are able to induce gastroenteritis, especially in young children with immunological or nutritional defects. The most frequently observed, using ELISA, are Rotavirus. The others : Norwalk agent, Coronavirus, Breda virus, are identified using electron microscope. Using symptomatic therapy, prognosis is related to precocious hydratation.PMID:38620189 | PMC:PMC7131556 | DOI:10.1016/S0399-077X(87)80114-2 (Source: Medecine et Maladies Infectieuses)

Necrotizing enterocolitis in a premature infant
We report a case of necrotizing enterocolitis in a 30 weeks old premature infant fed with breast milk. No ischemic etiology was present. Bacteriological and parasitological investigations were found to be negative. Only, a positive latex agglutination test for Adenoviruses was detected in stools collected the day of the bloody diarrhea. Detailed microbiological examinations are emphasized by this unusual finding because the role of pathogens in this disease deserves further understanding.PMID:38620191 | PMC:PMC7141009 | DOI:10.1016/S0399-077X(05)81185-0 (Source: Medecine et Maladies Infectieuses)

Diarrhea and HIV infection
Med Mal Infect. 2003 Feb 1;33:105-110. doi: 10.1016/S0399-077X(02)00479-1. Epub 2003 Feb 19.ABSTRACTThe development of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapies and of protease inhibitors in particular has permitted in the last ten years to dramatically improve the viral replication in HIV infected patients but the incidence of side effects and of diarrhoea in particular remains high. In general practice, the occurrence of diarrhoea should systematically lead to eliminate an infectious ætiology of diarrhoea. Many studies have demonstrated that diarrhoea under protease inhibitors and nelfinavir in particular are of a low grad...

Epub 2005 May 26.ABSTRACTAn epidemiological study has been carried on at the Amiens' Gynecology-Obstetrical center with the aim to determinate the aetiology of acute gastrointestinal disorders who affected part of the newborns over a two months period. Rotavirus was found in 16 babies (33 %) by electronmicroscopy and Enzyme-linked-Immuno-sorbent-Assay (ELISA). In one case, a « small round viruswas associated with the Rotavirus. Enteropathogenic bacteria were isolated only two times in this syndrom. The infection seem to releave of nosocomial conta...

Bilan étiologique de 403 gastro-entérites aiguës infantiles. Intérêt de la numération des leucocytes dans les selles
Med Mal Infect. 1981 Oct;11(10):519-523. doi: 10.1016/S0399-077X(81)80085-6. Epub 2005 Jun 2.ABSTRACTEtiological agents of 403 acute infantile gastroenteritis were inventoried during a three years period. During the last 18 months, qualitative and quantitative evaluation of leukocytes in stools was tried. This examination correlates with the supposed causative agent of diarrhea. Therefore, we insist on difficulties of this test : some discordant examples are described. Leukocytes numeration must be performed by experienced technician. Stools must be very liquid and well homogeneized.PMID:38620273 | PMC:PMC7131702 | DOI:10.1...

Intra-cellular bacteria, Mycoplasma pneumonia are rarely involved. For these reasons, macrolides or cyclines (except for children) are justified in first line treatment. For patients with acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, the choice of the treatment needs to be discuss. At the initial stage, most of the pathogens involved are those of acute bronchitis. Antibiotic is only prescribes for the prevention of a superinfection; this kind of prophylaxis has to be ...

Infectious Diseases: What You May Have Missed in 2023
Ann Intern Med. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.7326/M24-0679. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn 2023, published research on COVID-19 remains prominent. The aim of this article is to highlight important developments in infectious disease evidence unrelated to COVID-19 that were published in 2023. The literature was screened for sound new evidence relevant to internal medicine specialists and subspecialists whose focus of practice is not infectious diseases. The highlighted publications relate to various organisms and patient populations. One article provides insight into the updated guidelines for the diagnosis and management of infec...
