Differential protective impact of peptide vaccine formulae targeting the lung- and liver-stage of challenge Schistosoma mansoni infection in mice
Acta Trop. 2024 Apr 13:107208. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107208. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe study aimed to elicit protective immune responses against murine schistosomiasis mansoni at the parasite lung- and liver stage. Two peptides showing amino acid sequence similarity to gut cysteine peptidases, which induce strong memory immune effectors in the liver, were combined with a peptide based on S. mansoni thioredoxin peroxidase (TPX), a prominent lung-stage schistosomula excretory-secretory product, and alum as adjuvant. Only one of the 2 cysteine peptidases-based peptides in a multiple antigenic peptide constru...

The crosstalk between SUMOylation and immune system in host-pathogen interactions
Crit Rev Microbiol. 2024 Apr 15:1-23. doi: 10.1080/1040841X.2024.2339259. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPathogens can not only cause infectious diseases, immune system diseases, and chronic diseases, but also serve as potential triggers or initiators for certain tumors. They directly or indirectly damage human health and are one of the leading causes of global deaths. Small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) modification, a type of protein post-translational modification (PTM) that occurs when SUMO groups bond covalently to particular lysine residues on substrate proteins, plays a crucial role in both innate and adaptive immun...

Prevalence and genetic characteristics of  Staphylococcus aureus isolates from cell phones of medical students from Iran
Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung. 2024 Apr 15. doi: 10.1556/030.2024.02193. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough mobile phones as a rapid communication vehicle can lead to improved quality of healthcare, they can also facilitate the transmission of pathogens to patients. This current research focuses on genetic diversity, and genes involved in resistance and biofilm production of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from mobile phones of medical students. Antibiotic resistance profiling and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of antibiotic resistance and biofilm-related genes were investigated and statistically analyzed. ...

Infectious Diseases: What You May Have Missed in 2023
Ann Intern Med. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.7326/M24-0679. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn 2023, published research on COVID-19 remains prominent. The aim of this article is to highlight important developments in infectious disease evidence unrelated to COVID-19 that were published in 2023. The literature was screened for sound new evidence relevant to internal medicine specialists and subspecialists whose focus of practice is not infectious diseases. The highlighted publications relate to various organisms and patient populations. One article provides insight into the updated guidelines for the diagnosis and management of infec...

Management of Oral Manifestations of Herpes Simplex Virus, Varicella Zoster Virus, and Human Papillomavirus
Compend Contin Educ Dent. 2024 Apr;45(4):192-197; quiz 198.ABSTRACTHuman herpes virus is a family of DNA viruses that includes herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV). HSV-1 and HSV-2 are fairly common and result in oral and genital lesions. Recurrent infections of herpes include lesions on the lips resulting in pain and possibly societal stigma, making adequate treatment of these conditions crucial. VZV is the cause of chicken pox and shingles. Acyclovir and other nucleoside analogues have been the gold standard of treatment for HSV and VZV, but newer, more effective treatments are being developed, whi...

CNS Aspergillosis and Cryptococcosis with Cytomegalovirus Pneumonia in a Patient with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Treated with Acalabrutinib
We describe a 68-year-old male who developed multiple bacterial, fungal and viral infections while on treatment with acalabrutinib. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of concomitant CNS infections with Cryptococcus neoformans and Aspergillus fumigatus, along with cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) pneumonia while on acalabrutinib. This case adds to the scarce literature of fungal and bacterial infections associated with acalabrutinib, raising the suspicion that infection risk is a medication class effect for BTKis.PMID:38621678 | DOI:10.1177/08971900241247660 (Source: Herpes)

Progression of herpesvirus infection remodels mitochondrial organization and metabolism
PLoS Pathog. 2024 Apr 15;20(4):e1011829. doi: 10.1371/journal.ppat.1011829. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTViruses target mitochondria to promote their replication, and infection-induced stress during the progression of infection leads to the regulation of antiviral defenses and mitochondrial metabolism which are opposed by counteracting viral factors. The precise structural and functional changes that underlie how mitochondria react to the infection remain largely unclear. Here we show extensive transcriptional remodeling of protein-encoding host genes involved in the respiratory chain, apoptosis, and structural organizati...

Combination of ganciclovir and trifluridine prevents drug-resistance emergence in HSV-1
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2024 Apr 15:e0011024. doi: 10.1128/aac.00110-24. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOcular herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) infections can lead to visual impairment. Long-term acyclovir (ACV) prophylaxis reduces the frequency of recurrences but is associated with drug resistance. Novel therapies are needed to treat drug-resistant HSV-1 infections. Here, we describe the effects of trifluridine (TFT) in combination with ACV or ganciclovir (GCV) on HSV-1 replication and drug-resistance emergence. Wild-type HSV-1 was grown under increasing doses of one antiviral (ACV, GCV, or TFT) or combinations thereof ...

In Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Racial Disparities Exist in Burden of Vaccine-preventable Disease Hospitalizations and Outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: Significant racial disparities in VPD hospitalization and in-hospital morbidity were found among adults with IBD in the United States. With the increasing prevalence of IBD in non-white populations, targeted efforts are needed to improve health equity.PMID:38619208 | DOI:10.1097/MCG.0000000000002005 (Source: Herpes)

Kaposi's Sarcoma with Primary Lymph Node Involvement in a Retroviral Infected (RVI) Patient
Int Med Case Rep J. 2024 Apr 8;17:311-319. doi: 10.2147/IMCRJ.S458320. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTOne kind of angioproliferative disorder is Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Growth of spindle-shaped cells, edema, inflammation, and neoangiogenesis are its defining features. Because it lacks the typical indicators of malignancy, it is classified as an intermediate neoplasm. People who are immunocompromised, receiving organ transplants, or receiving antiretroviral therapy are linked to KS. Although lymph node involvement by KS is extremely uncommon, when it does occur, it usually manifests as either the epidemic form in (Human Immuno-def...
