Factors associated with immune-related thyroid dysfunction induced by PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in cancer patients: an observational study
This study aimed to identify the potential factors associated with immune thyroid dysfunction caused by programmed death 1 (PD-1)/programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitors in cancer patients. We conducted a retrospective study of thyroid immune-related adverse events (irAEs) in cancer patients treated with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors at Tianjin First Central Hospital from January 2020 to March 2023. Thyroid irAEs were characterized as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis followed by hypothyroidism. A total of 175 patients were screened in the study, of whom 48 patients (27%) developed thyroid irAEs (including 24...

Novel Association of KLRC4-KLRK1 Gene Polymorphisms with Susceptibility and Progression of Antithyroid Drug-Induced Agranulocytosis
Conclusions The findings suggest that the KLRC4-KLRK1 gene polymorphism is associated with susceptibility and progression of ATD-induced agranulocytosis. Patients carrying the rs2734565-C allele had a higher susceptibility and faster onset time of TIA. Thyroid function and epilepsy: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study
ConclusionThis study indicates that there is no causal relationship between thyroid-related disorders and various types of epilepsy. Future research should aim to avoid potential confounding factors that might impact the study. (Source: Frontiers in Human Neuroscience)

Evaluation of Bone Turnover Markers Such as Osteoprotegerin, Sclerostin and Dickkopf-1 in Subclinical Hyperthyroidism
In this study, it was aimed to assess effects of subclinical hyperthyroidism (SH) on bone metabolism using osteoprotegerin (OPG), sclerostin, Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) and biochemical parameters. This cross-sectional prospective study included 40 patients with SH and 40 euthyroid controls. Serum OPG, sclerostin, DKK-1, type-1 procollagen, C-terminal polypeptide (CTx) and 24-hours urine N-terminal telopeptide (NTx) were measures using ELISA kit. Bone mineral density measurements were performed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Risk for 10-years hip and major fracture was estimated by Turkish version of FRAX. No signifi...

Thyroid diseases in children and adolescents requiring surgical treatment —indications, techniques, results, and complications based on 10 years of the single center’s own experience
ConclusionsCollaboration within a multidisciplinary team ensures optimal surgical outcomes in children and adolescents with thyroid disease. With extreme caution, thyroid removal is a safe procedure with few complications, but the experience of the surgeon performing thyroid surgery in children remains crucial. Despite the absence of such a diagnosis in the first fine-needle aspiration biopsy, the high percentage of thyroid carcinomas in the analyzed group may be because the initial biopsy was performed in a less experienced center, also in terms of histopathological laboratory. Hence, we point out the necessity of perform...

Effect of thyroid-stimulating hormone suppression on quality of life in thyroid lobectomy patients: interim analysis of a multicenter, randomized controlled trial in low- to intermediate-risk thyroid cancer patients (MASTER study)
CONCLUSION: In the short-term postoperative period, the physical HR-QoL scores in thyroid lobectomy patients were better when they did not receive TSH suppression. This study suggests the importance of considering HR-QoL when setting TSH suppression targets in thyroid lobectomy patients.PMID:38205091 | PMC:PMC10774702 | DOI:10.4174/astr.2024.106.1.19 (Source: Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research)

Iodine: a scoping review for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023
Food Nutr Res. 2023 Dec 26;67. doi: 10.29219/fnr.v67.10369. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTIodine is essential for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). As in many other parts of the world, insufficient iodine intake and consequently insufficient iodine status is a public health challenge in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The main dietary sources of iodine in the Nordic and Baltic countries include cow's milk, saltwater fish, eggs, products containing iodised salt, and iodised table salt. Only Denmark (DK), Finland (FI) and Sweden (SE) have implemented mandatory (DK) or voluntary (SE, ...
