A young patient with Graves' disease presenting with a triad of heart failure, pancytopenia, and jaundice: A case report
We describe a case of a young man who presented with progressive cough, increased abdominal girth and ankle swelling for a few months. On examination, he had jaundice, bilateral exophthalmos, diffuse goiter, ascites, and significant lower limb edema. Laboratory investigations showed increased Thyroxin level with a suppressed thyroid stimulating hormone and positive anti-thyrotropin receptor antibodies. Also, the patient had pancytopenia, coagulopathy and cholestatic pattern of elevated liver enzymes. Echocardiography demonstrated mildly reduced left ventricular function with diastolic dysfunction, but electrocardiogram did...

Impact of carbimazole combined with vitamin E on testicular injury induced by experimental hyperthyroidism in adult albino rats: oxidative/inflammatory/apoptotic pathways
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of combining carbimazole (CBZ) with vitamin E (VE) on testicular injury induced by experimental hyperthyroidism in adult albino rats, focusing on oxidative, inflammatory, and apoptotic pathways. In this experimental study, 64 adult male albino Wistar rats were divided into eight groups: Group I (control-untreated), Group II (CBZ-control), Group III (VE-control), Group IV (CBZ + VE-control), Group V (levothyroxine-induced testicular injury), Group VI (levothyroxine + CBZ-treated), Group VII (levothyroxine + VE-treated), and Group VIII (levothyroxine + CBZ + VE-treated). The study was ...

Prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis among children with autoimmune hepatitis
ConclusionAutoimmune hepatitis in Egyptian children is commonly associated with other autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune thyroiditis is the most common to be associated with AIH in pediatric patients. As it is not usually clinically manifesting, regular screening for AIT in children with AIH is mandatory. (Source: Italian Journal of Pediatrics)

Once upon a time in Anatolia: the kings with bulging eyes
Hormones (Athens). 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1007/s42000-024-00561-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Hittite Empire, formed by the Hittites who settled in central Anatolia at the beginning of the second millennium BC, has left behind rich archeological remains. In this historical review, statues of the Hittite priest-kings, King Idrimi, King Šuppiluliuma, and King Tarhunza, who ruled in these lands in ancient times, are analyzed. Graves' disease (GD) is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Patients with GD are also at risk of developing Graves' orbitopathy (GO). Upper eyelid retraction and exophthalmos (bulging eyes) a...

Incidence of thyroid dysfunction caused by immune checkpoint inhibitors combined with chemotherapy: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: In TNBC, the incidence of hypothyroidism caused by the combination of ICIs and chemotherapy was significantly higher than that caused by hyperthyroidism. Pembrolizumab combined with chemotherapy resulted in the highest incidence of hypothyroidism. The incidence of hypothyroidism in patients with advanced TNBC was significantly higher than that in patients with early stage TNBC. In addition, ICIs combined with chemotherapy resulted in 16 out of 3,226 patients experiencing grade ≥ 3 thyroid dysfunction. Although the incidence of severe thyroid dysfunction is low, it requires attention.PROSPERO: CRD42023477933.P...

Frequency and characteristics of immune-related thyroid adverse events in patients with resected stage III/IV melanoma treated with adjuvant PD-1 inhibitors: a national cohort study
ConclusionsIrTAE is a common side effect to PD-1 inhibitors primarily occurring within the first 3  months, with a high risk of persistency. Female sex is a strong predictive factor. IrTAE was not associated with improved clinical outcome. (Source: Supportive Care in Cancer)

Capsiate ameliorates secondary hyperparathyroidism by improving insulin sensitivity and inhibiting angiogenesis
This study aims to evaluate the effects and mechanisms of capsiates in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism. To achieve our research objectives, we conducted a study on patients' serum and examined changes in metabolic markers using serum metabolomics. We induced secondary hyperparathyroidism in rat through dietary intervention and divided them into four groups. The first group, referred to as the Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) group, received a low-calcium and high-phosphate diet (0.2% calcium, 1.2% phosphorus). The second group served as the control group, receiving a standard phosphate and calcium diet (0.6% calciu...
