Pretibial myxedema in Grave's disease: A case report and treatment review of the literature
We present a case of biopsy-verified pretibial myxedema in a 70-year-old male patient with diagnosed hyperthyroidism and no prior history of Graves' disease. Topical corticosteroid and antithyroid drug administration led to successful resolution of the skin lesions. This case emphasizes the importance of considering pretibial myxedema even in atypical presentations of Graves' disease and underscores the value of prompt treatment. (Source: Clinical Case Reports)

Evaluation of a novel, sensitive thyroid-stimulating hormone assay as a diagnostic test for thyroid disease in cats
Am J Vet Res. 2024 Feb 23:1-11. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.23.12.0278. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: Clinicians commonly use thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations to diagnose thyroid disorders in humans and dogs. In cats, canine TSH chemiluminescent immunoassays (CLIA) assays are commonly used to measure TSH, but these TSH-CLIAs cannot measure low TSH concentrations (< 0.03 ng/mL) and therefore cannot distinguish between low-normal concentrations and truly low TSH concentrations (characteristic of hyperthyroidism). Our aim was to evaluate a novel TSH assay based on bulk acoustic wave (BAW) technology that h...

Cardioprotective Effects of Losartan and Diminazene against the Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Hyperthyroidism Rats
Can J Physiol Pharmacol. 2024 Feb 20. doi: 10.1139/cjpp-2023-0122. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland produces high levels of thyroid hormone. Heart diseases are one of the main complications of hyperthyroidism. Several studies have shown that losartan (LOS) and diminazene aceturate (DIZE) possess cardioprotection effects against cardiac hypertrophy, ischemic heart disease, and heart failure. The research aimed to investigate the cardioprotection of LOS, DIZE, and their combination in the case of levothyroxine-induced cardiomyopathy in rats. Hyperthyroidism was induced by l...

Increased risk of incident gout in patients with hyperthyroidism: a nationwide retrospective cohort study
AbstractPrevious studies have reported that thyroid dysfunction is associated with increased serum uric acid levels; however, the relationship between hyperthyroidism and incidence of clinical manifestations of gout has not been fully investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to longitudinally investigate the risk of gout in patients with hyperthyroidism. This nationwide retrospective cohort study used data from the Korean National Health Claims Database. We included 76,494 patients with hyperthyroidism and 76,542 age- and sex-matched controls. A Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to adjust for potential con...

Early treatment will prevent feto-maternal complications in thyroid disorders during pregnancy: A prospective study
CONCLUSIONS: Due to the high prevalence of thyroid disorders during pregnancy, universal screening of thyroid disorders should be done in early pregnancy instead of high-risk screening. Early detection and early treatment in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy help to prevent maternal and fetal complications of thyroid disorders in pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia is to be monitored in treated pregnant females with hypothyroidism.PMID:38361867 | PMC:PMC10866218 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_1185_23 (Source: Primary Care)

Farming activity and risk of treated thyroid disorders: Insights from the TRACTOR project, a nationwide cohort study
DISCUSSION: Our findings offer a comprehensive overview of thyroid disease risks within the FM community. Thyroid ailments might not stem from a single cause but likely arise from the combined effects of various causal agents and triggering factors (agricultural exposome). Further investigation into distinct farming activities-especially those involving cattle-is essential to pinpoint potential risk factors that could enhance thyroid disease monitoring in agriculture.PMID:38365059 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2024.118458 (Source: Environmental Research)
