Iodine: a scoping review for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023
Food Nutr Res. 2023 Dec 26;67. doi: 10.29219/fnr.v67.10369. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTIodine is essential for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). As in many other parts of the world, insufficient iodine intake and consequently insufficient iodine status is a public health challenge in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The main dietary sources of iodine in the Nordic and Baltic countries include cow's milk, saltwater fish, eggs, products containing iodised salt, and iodised table salt. Only Denmark (DK), Finland (FI) and Sweden (SE) have implemented mandatory (DK) or voluntary (SE, ...

Association of thyroid dysfunction in individuals  ≥ 65 years of age with subclinical cardiac abnormalities
CONCLUSIONS: In this free-living elderly cohort, subclinical and overt hypothyroidism were associated with abnormalities of blood biomarkers consistent with diastolic overload and myocardial necrosis respectively, whereas subclinical hyperthyroidism tended to be associated with myocardial fibrosis and decreased left atrial strain. Our findings could represent stage B heart failure and illuminate distinct aspects of the pathobiology of heart disease related to thyroid gland dysfunction with potential clinical implications.PMID:38183678 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae001 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

Does Retinol-Binding Protein 4 (holo- and apo-RBP4) Increase or Remain Constant in Sera from Patients with Hypothyroidism?
J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 2023;69(6):412-419. doi: 10.3177/jnsv.69.412.ABSTRACTRetinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is a retinol transporter in the blood plasma. Many diseases alter the plasma or serum levels of RBP4. Since serum RBP4 concentrations have been reported to decrease in hyperthyroidism, this study investigated whether serum RBP4 concentrations increased or remained constant in hypothyroidism. In sera from patients with hypothyroidism (n=71), hyperthyroidism (n=30), and healthy subjects (n=20), serum concentrations of RBP4 (sum of holo- and apo-RBP4), retinol, albumin, creatinine, and related constituents were ...
