Treatment for Hyperthyroidism During Pregnancy —Reply
In Reply We agree that overt Graves disease hyperthyroidism requires treatment during pregnancy. As described in our review, risks for preeclampsia, low birth weight, miscarriage, and preterm delivery are increased without therapy, and as noted by Dr Watkins and colleagues, congenital anomaly risk is higher without treatment than when propylthiouracil is taken. For individuals who need treatment with antithyroid drugs during pregnancy, propylthiouracil is preferred over methimazole during the period of organogenesis. (Source: JAMA)

Thyroid hormone controls the timing of cochlear ribbon synapse maturation
In this study, we found that the thyroid hormone receptor α (Thrα) is expressed in both sensory epithelium and spiral ganglion neurons in mice. Hypothyroidism, induced by Pax8 gene knockout, significantly delays the synaptic pruning during postnatal development in mice. Detailed spatiotemporal analysis of ribbon synapse distribution reveals that synaptic maturation involves not only ribbon pruning but also their migration, both of which are notably delayed in the cochlea of Pax8 knockout mice. Intriguingly, postnatal hyperthyroidism, induced by intraperitoneal injections of liothyronine sodium (T3), accelerates the pruni...

TSHR signaling promotes hippocampal dependent memory formation through modulating Wnt5a/ β-catenin mediated neurogenesis
In this study, we found that Tshr-deficient in the hippocampal neurons impairs the learning and memory abilities of mice, accompanying by a decline in the number of newborn neurons. Notably, Tshr ablation in the hippocampus decreases the expression of Wnt5a, thereby inactivating the β-catenin signaling pathway to reduce the neurogenesis. Conversely, activating of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway by the agonist SKL2001 results in an increase in hippocampal neurogenesis, resulting in the amelioration in the deficits of memory caused by Tshr deletion. Understanding how TSHR signaling in the hippocampus regulates memory provides in...

Iodine-131 intervention in hyperthyroidism with hepatic insufficiency: Metabolomic evaluation
This study aimed to determine the optimal iodine-131 (131I) intervention dose for alleviating hyperthyroidism with HI and to identify serum metabolic biomarkers for early diagnosis using UPLC-Q/TOF-MS technology. A mouse model for early 131I intervention was established to monitor changes in physiological response, body weight, fur condition, thyroid, and liver function. Metabolite identification was achieved through UPLC-Q/TOF-MS and further analyzed via MetaboAnalyst. Six biomarkers were identified and subjected to ROC analysis. Early intervention with 80 μCi 131I per gram of thyroid tissue effectively controlled hypert...

Factors predicting remission in hyperthyroid patients after low-dose I-131 therapy: 20  years retrospective study from a tertiary care hospital
ConclusionHigh therapeutic outcome was observed with a single dose of LDT while on iodine-free diet. Remission with single dose of LDT occurred in 90% patients by 5th month. Of them 56% patients were treatment naive prior to LDT. LDT is thus a safe and effective therapy in hyperthyroid patients and can be recommended as a primary modality of management. Case report: A case of hyperthyroidism secondary to bone metastasis of differentiated thyroid cancer
It is usually believed that differentiated thyroid cancer is less likely to have distant metastases and rarely occurs secondary to hyperthyroidism. In our case report, we describe a patient diagnosed with thyroid fetal adenoma in 2002 who subsequently presented with a painful lump in her right rib. Through puncture biopsy, the mass was considered as metastatic follicular thyroid carcinoma, and then she appeared to have hyperthyroidism. The results of SPECT examination and other tests suggested that the hyperthyroidism was secondary to the thyroid cancer. The patient further underwent total thyroidectomy, and the pathology ...

Methimazole-induced urticaria in hyperthyroid patients: A safe re-administration protocol
CONCLUSION: Given the importance of this drug in the management of hyperthyroidism, MMI should not be withdrawn in cases of urticaria. After the resolution of urticaria, a gradual reintroduction of MMI should be attempted with concomitant antihistamine therapy.PMID:38403562 | DOI:10.1016/j.therap.2023.12.006 (Source: Therapie)

A rare case of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis revealing Graves' disease in a young Malian
AbstractSporadic thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare muscle disorder that manifests with abrupt muscle weakness and hypokalemia associated with hyperthyroidism. It is mostly reported in the Asian population, and rare in Caucasians. Only few cases have been reported in people with black ancestry. Here, we report a rare case of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis revealing Graves' disease in a young Malian. A 17-year-old man was admitted in the Neurology clinic with rapid proximal tetraplegia that started after strenuous physical activities at the school. Clinical examination confirmed the proximal weakness. In addition,...
