Early treatment will prevent feto-maternal complications in thyroid disorders during pregnancy: A prospective study
CONCLUSIONS: Due to the high prevalence of thyroid disorders during pregnancy, universal screening of thyroid disorders should be done in early pregnancy instead of high-risk screening. Early detection and early treatment in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy help to prevent maternal and fetal complications of thyroid disorders in pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia is to be monitored in treated pregnant females with hypothyroidism.PMID:38361867 | PMC:PMC10866218 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_1185_23 (Source: Primary Care)

Farming activity and risk of treated thyroid disorders: Insights from the TRACTOR project, a nationwide cohort study
DISCUSSION: Our findings offer a comprehensive overview of thyroid disease risks within the FM community. Thyroid ailments might not stem from a single cause but likely arise from the combined effects of various causal agents and triggering factors (agricultural exposome). Further investigation into distinct farming activities-especially those involving cattle-is essential to pinpoint potential risk factors that could enhance thyroid disease monitoring in agriculture.PMID:38365059 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2024.118458 (Source: Environmental Research)

Genetic insights into repurposing statins for hyperthyroidism prevention: a drug-target Mendelian randomization study
ConclusionThis study supports HMGCR inhibition as a promising therapeutic strategy for hyperthyroidism and suggests its underlying mechanisms may extend beyond lipid metabolism. Further investigations through laboratory studies and clinical trials are necessary to confirm and elucidate these findings. (Source: Frontiers in Endocrinology)

Increased risk of incident gout in patients with hyperthyroidism: a nationwide retrospective cohort study
AbstractPrevious studies have reported that thyroid dysfunction is associated with increased serum uric acid levels; however, the relationship between hyperthyroidism and incidence of clinical manifestations of gout has not been fully investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to longitudinally investigate the risk of gout in patients with hyperthyroidism. This nationwide retrospective cohort study used data from the Korean National Health Claims Database. We included 76,494 patients with hyperthyroidism and 76,542 age- and sex-matched controls. A Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to adjust for potential con...

Thyroid dysfunction and Alzheimer's disease, a vicious circle
Recently, research into the link between thyroid dysfunction and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) remains a current topic of interest. Previous research has primarily concentrated on examining the impact of thyroid dysfunction on the risk of developing AD, or solely explored the mechanisms of interaction between hypothyroidism and AD, a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms linking thyroid dysfunction, including hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) still require further elucidation. Therefore, the aim of this review is to offer a thorough and comprehensive explanation of the potential mechanisms u...

Recurrent peri ‐myocarditis: A rarer but unfortunate redundant presentation of thyroid storm
Key Clinical MessageThyroid storm represents a critical and life-threatening complication from hyperthyroidism, with a notable mortality risk. Limited literature reports have explored the correlation between thyroid storm and peri-myocarditis, although the precise pathophysiological underpinnings remain unclear. The pathophysiology of how thyroid storm and peri-myocarditis are associated is not clearly understood; however, unfavorable prognostic factors include atrial fibrillation and recurrent thyrotoxicosis. Here, we present a case concerning recurrent peri-myocarditis concomitant with a thyroid storm. (Source: Clinical Case Reports)

Thyroid dysfunction caused by exposure to environmental endocrine disruptors and the underlying mechanism: A review
Chem Biol Interact. 2024 Feb 8;391:110909. doi: 10.1016/j.cbi.2024.110909. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThyroid disease has been rapidly increasing, but its causes remain unclear. At present, many studies have focused on the relationship between environmental endocrine disruptors (EEDs) and the pathogenesis of thyroid disease. Herein, we summarize such studies exploring the effects of exposure to common EEDs on thyrotoxicosis, finding that EEDs appear to contribute to the pathogenesis of thyroid-related diseases such as thyroid cancer, goiter, thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism. To explore this causative eff...

Bacteroidaceae, Bacteroides, and Veillonella: emerging protectors against Graves ’ disease
ConclusionA causal relationship exists between gut microbiota and Graves’ disease. Bacteroidaceae, Bacteroides, and Veillonella emerge as protective factors against Graves’ disease development. Prospective probiotic supplementation may offer a novel avenue for adjunctive treatment in the management of Graves’ disease in the future. (Source: Frontiers in cellular and infection microbiology)

The association of plasma connective tissue growth factor levels with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in patients with overt hyperthyroidism
ConclusionThe level of circulating plasma CTGF in the LV diastolic dysfunction group was significantly increased. Plasma CTGF level is an independent risk factor for LV diastolic dysfunction. Compared with serum BNP level, the plasma CTGF level may have auxiliary diagnostic value for LV diastolic dysfunction in hyperthyroid patients. (Source: Frontiers in Endocrinology)

The impact of thyroid function on total spine bone mineral density in postmenopausal women
ConclusionThe total spinal BMD had a positive relationship with thyroid stimulating hormone in postmenopausal women, and that appropriate TSH level (1.38 –2.32 mIU/L) was accompanied by higher total spinal BMD. (Source: Endocrine)

Endocrine manifestations in adults with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: a retrospective single-center cohort study
ConclusionHypoparathyroidism, hypothyroidism, and obesity are common endocrine manifestations in patients with 22q11DS but are probably underdiagnosed and undertreated, indicating the need for multidisciplinary follow-up including an endocrinologist. Chronic medical conditions in croatian war veterans compared to the general population: 25 years after the war
This study included two groups of subjects, i.e. 1453 participants who are Croatian war veterans and 1429 participants from the general population. Medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests and specific diagnostic procedures were taken during systematic physical examination in both groups. The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary heart disease, malignancy, psychiatric diseases, cholelithiasis, nephrolithiasis, smoking and alcohol consumption was analyzed. Croatian war veterans were found to be more likely to d...
