Malaria in a vulnerable population living in quilombo remnant communities in the Brazilian Amazon: a cross-sectional study from 2005-2020
Rev Inst Med Trop Sao Paulo. 2024 Apr 19;66:e25. doi: 10.1590/S1678-9946202466025. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTQuilombo remnant communities are areas officially recognized by the Brazilian government as historical communities founded by formerly enslaved individuals. These communities are mostly located in the endemic areas of malaria in the Brazilian Amazon. We retrospectively described the prevalence of malaria among individuals living in 32 recognized quilombo remnant communities in the Baiao and Oriximina municipalities located in the Para State. The number of malaria cases and the Annual Parasitic Incidence (API) recorde...

Threats to reptiles at global and regional scales
In this study, we calculate the probability of a reptile species in a specific location being affected by one of seven biodiversity threats-agriculture, climate change, hunting, invasive species, logging, pollution, and urbanization. We conducted the analysis at a global scale, using a 50 km × 50 km grid, and evaluated the impact of these threats by studying their relationship with the risk of extinction. We find that climate change, logging, pollution, and invasive species are most linked to extinction risk. However, we also show that there is considerable geographical variation in these results. Our study highlights the...

World War I and the Thomas Splint: A Historical Review
Mil Med. 2024 Apr 24:usae108. doi: 10.1093/milmed/usae108. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Thomas splint, the first practical traction splint for femoral fractures, revolutionized the capabilities of military medicine. Its usage in WWI lowered the mortality rate from 80% to nearly 15%. Its development not only shaped modern orthopedics but also established the splint as standard equipment in hospitals worldwide.PMID:38656831 | DOI:10.1093/milmed/usae108 (Source: Military Medicine)

Angiotensin Receptor-Neprilysin Inhibitor Suppresses Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System Activation After Cardiac Surgery Using Cardiopulmonary Bypass
CONCLUSIONS: Sacubitril/valsartan administration was safe immediately after open heart surgery in patients without postoperative hypotension. It enhanced serum atrial natriuretic peptide concentrations and suppressed RAAS activation.PMID:38658351 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-23-0879 (Source: Circulation Journal)

Jugular Approach for the Transcatheter Pacemaker Implant - Better Access for Smaller Hearts?
CONCLUSIONS: Although the femoral procedure today maintains an excellent safety profile and procedure experience for most global implants, this study provides the rationale as to why the jugular approach may improve the ease of the Micra implant in small hearts, namely by reducing the tortuosity of the navigation across the tricuspid valve.PMID:38658350 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-24-0083 (Source: Circulation Journal)

A Brief History of Lacrimal Bypass Techniques
CONCLUSION: Lacrimal bypass surgery has evolved due to innovation in microsurgical techniques, instruments and materials. Conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomy with Jones tube insertion is the predominant bypass technique, reflecting a culmination of historical developments. Understanding the variety of lacrimal bypass techniques is important for exploring alternative options when necessary.PMID:38654615 | DOI:10.1080/08820538.2024.2345286 (Source: Seminars in Ophthalmology)

A Qualitative Examination of Perceptions of Mindfulness Among Arab, Middle Eastern, and North African Americans: Implications for Cultural Adaptation of Mindfulness-Based Interventions
CONCLUSION: The participants in this study described experiencing high levels of stress and identified micro- and macro-level stressors related to their Arab/MENA American identity, including discrimination, exclusion, historical and intergenerational trauma, and protracted sociopolitical crises in their heritage countries. They viewed mindfulness as a potentially useful approach to coping with stress. At the same time, participants identified aspects of mindfulness that could be adjusted to better align with their cultural values and experiences. Potential adaptations to MBIs for Arab/MENA Americans were identified based ...

National trends in prescription drug expenditures and projections for 2024
CONCLUSION: For 2024, we expect overall prescription drug spending to rise by 10.0% to 12.0%, whereas in clinics and hospitals we anticipate an 11.0% to 13.0% increase and a 0% to 2.0% increase, respectively, compared to 2023. These national estimates of future pharmaceutical expenditure growth may not be representative of any health system because of the myriad of local factors that influence actual spending.PMID:38656319 | DOI:10.1093/ajhp/zxae105 (Source: American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy : AJHP)

Contributions of Synthetic Chemicals to Autoimmune Disease Development and Occurrence
AbstractPurpose of ReviewExposure to many synthetic chemicals has been linked to a variety of adverse human health effects, including autoimmune diseases. In this scoping review, we summarize recent evidence detailing the effects of synthetic environmental chemicals on autoimmune diseases and highlight current research gaps and recommendations for future studies.Recent FindingsWe identified 68 recent publications related to environmental chemical exposures and autoimmune diseases. Most studies evaluated exposure to persistent environmental chemicals and autoimmune conditions including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lu...
