Challenges and Lessons from Conducting a Community-Engaged Evaluation of a Community Advisory Board-A Case Study from Flint
Prog Community Health Partnersh. 2024;18(1):31-36.ABSTRACTCommunity-engaged research often poses challenges due to exactly those qualities that make it desirable: it provides a new model of research that differs in many ways from top-down, university-led, prospectively designed approaches. While many have discussed the challenges to conducting community-engaged research, few have provided precise and generalizable lessons for how to surmount these challenges. Here we discuss the challenges experienced in a project that was community-engaged at three levels: 1) a research team consisting of an academic and a community partn...

Pharmacokinetics of apixaban in patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PAP-UP)
CONCLUSION: The pharmacokinetic characteristics of apixaban in subjects who had undergone pancreaticoduodenectomy are not significantly different from those of healthy controls. Though the sample size of this study is small, results suggest that no change to apixaban dose regimen is needed in patients who have had a pancreaticoduodenectomy.PMID:38660886 | DOI:10.5414/CP204502 (Source: Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics)

Couching of cataractous lens in microphthalmic eyes with irido-fundal coloboma: revisiting the historical technique
ConclusionCouching of cataractous lens is an effective and safe method in microphthalmic eyes with irido-fundal coloboma as last resort procedure, where no other surgical procedure may work. It provides an ambulatory gain of visual acuity in previously non-ambulatory subjects. Corneal measurements help in determining the subset of patients where couching offers viable option. IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 532: Assessing the Vulnerability and Adaptation Needs of Mozambique & rsquo;s Health Sector to Climate: A Comprehensive Study
This study aims to assess Mozambique’s health sector’s vulnerability and adaptation needs to climate change. Following a methodology proposed by the World Health Organization and the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change, a six-step vulnerability and adaptation assessment was conducted to conduct the Health Vulnerability Index (HVI) for Mozambique’s regions (n=161). The HVI integrates historical climate, epidemiological, and socio-economic data at the district level, and was computed using exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity dimensions. The results revealed spatial pa...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1969: A Comparison between Bulgarian Tanacetum parthenium Essential Oil from Two Different Locations
Stanislava Ivanova Tanacetum parthenium L. (Asteraceae) is a perennial herbaceous plant with a long-standing historical use in traditional medicine. Recently Tanacetum parthenium L. essential oil has been associated with a promising potential for future applications in the pharmaceutical industry, in the cosmetics industry, and in agriculture. Investigations on the essential oil (EO) have indicated antimicrobial, antioxidant, and repellent activity. The present study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition of Bulgarian T. parthenium essential oil from two different regions, to compare the results to those reported ...

Massive DNA study reveals mating customs of mysterious medieval horse riders
In 568 C.E., according to contemporary records, warlike horse riders from the Mongolian steppes called the Avars surged into the grassy plains flanking the Danube River, in roughly the territory of modern Hungary. Together with other groups from Central Asia, they formed a new power center in Europe, forcing the Byzantine Empire to pay tribute. But they left no written history. Now, using DNA from hundreds of burials—including entire Avar cemeteries—researchers have filled in some of the gaps, using kinship data to reconstruct Avar mating patterns, mobility, and even local politics. Published today in...

Malaria in a vulnerable population living in quilombo remnant communities in the Brazilian Amazon: a cross-sectional study from 2005-2020
Rev Inst Med Trop Sao Paulo. 2024 Apr 19;66:e25. doi: 10.1590/S1678-9946202466025. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTQuilombo remnant communities are areas officially recognized by the Brazilian government as historical communities founded by formerly enslaved individuals. These communities are mostly located in the endemic areas of malaria in the Brazilian Amazon. We retrospectively described the prevalence of malaria among individuals living in 32 recognized quilombo remnant communities in the Baiao and Oriximina municipalities located in the Para State. The number of malaria cases and the Annual Parasitic Incidence (API) recorde...

Jugular Approach for the Transcatheter Pacemaker Implant - Better Access for Smaller Hearts?
CONCLUSIONS: Although the femoral procedure today maintains an excellent safety profile and procedure experience for most global implants, this study provides the rationale as to why the jugular approach may improve the ease of the Micra implant in small hearts, namely by reducing the tortuosity of the navigation across the tricuspid valve.PMID:38658350 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-24-0083 (Source: Circulation Journal)

Angiotensin Receptor-Neprilysin Inhibitor Suppresses Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System Activation After Cardiac Surgery Using Cardiopulmonary Bypass
CONCLUSIONS: Sacubitril/valsartan administration was safe immediately after open heart surgery in patients without postoperative hypotension.
