Beyond exposure: A healthy broadening of posttraumatic stress disorder treatment options: Commentary on Rubenstein et al. (2024)
Am Psychol. 2024 Apr;79(3):347-349. doi: 10.1037/amp0001233.ABSTRACTThis commentary on Rubenstein et al. (2024) applauds their sensitive historical exploration of exposure therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and balanced review of the strengths and weaknesses of that approach. I offer five points to expand on their contribution. (a) Stringent exposure therapy workforce requirements limit scalability, thus restricting access for the large number of patients in need of PTSD treatment. (b) There are additional non-trauma-focused approaches that show efficacy for PTSD. (c) Results of exposure therapy trials should...

Inflammatory breast cancer: Epidemiologic data and therapeutic results
In this study, we reviewed the literature using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database compared to other published series. We observed that in the high incidence areas (North of Africa) when compared to "classical" breast cancer, IBC was associated to younger age (less than 50 years) with rapid evolution of signs and symptoms (in less than 3 up to 6 months), and more aggressive clinical and histopathological-molecular parameters, due to the predominance of triple-negative and HER2+ subtypes in around 60% of cases. An epidemiologic trend was observed in both high and low incidence areas since the ei...

The history of Ervin Bauer's publications on the theory of life
Biosystems. 2024 Apr 16:105212. doi: 10.1016/j.biosystems.2024.105212. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTErvin Bauer (1890-1938) made historical contributions to contemporary biology, provided a new definition of life, defined the contents of theoretical biology. He worked in different countries, perturbed by deep historical events. These historical events necessarily impacted his fate and finally led to the violent loss of his life and the life of his wife. His work and with it his theory of life had a no less complicated history than the history of his personal life. Bauer's main work "Theoretical Biology" was published in 1...

Data-oriented protein kinase drug discovery
Eur J Med Chem. 2024 Apr 15;271:116413. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmech.2024.116413. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe continued growth of data from biological screening and medicinal chemistry provides opportunities for data-driven experimental design and decision making in early-phase drug discovery. Approaches adopted from data science help to integrate internal and public domain data and extract knowledge from historical in-house data. Protein kinase (PK) drug discovery is an exemplary area where large amounts of data are accumulating, providing a valuable knowledge base for discovery projects. Herein, the evolution of PK drug d...

Long-term exposure to ambient fine particulate matter and risk of liver cancer in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings in this large cohort suggest that residential ambient PM2.5 levels may be associated with liver cancer risk. Further exploration of the variation in associations by age and physical activity are important areas for future research.PMID:38636274 | DOI:10.1016/j.envint.2024.108637 (Source: Environment International)

Multidrug-resistant pathogens and ventilator-associated pneumonia in critically ill COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients: a prospective observational monocentric comparative study
CONCLUSION: COVID-19 patients with VAP appear to have a significantly higher ICU and in-hospital mortality risk regardless of the presence of MDR and DTR pathogens. Tracheostomy and a shorter duration of mechanical ventilation appear to be associated with better outcomes.PMID:38637766 | PMC:PMC11027225 | DOI:10.1186/s12931-024-02779-1 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Statistical sampling of missing environmental variables improves biophysical genomic prediction in wheat
Theor Appl Genet. 2024 Apr 18;137(5):108. doi: 10.1007/s00122-024-04613-0.ABSTRACTThe integration of genomic prediction with crop growth models enabled the estimation of missing environmental variables which improved the prediction accuracy of grain yield. Since the invention of whole-genome prediction (WGP) more than two decades ago, breeding programmes have established extensive reference populations that are cultivated under diverse environmental conditions. The introduction of the CGM-WGP model, which integrates crop growth models (CGM) with WGP, has expanded the applications of WGP to the prediction of unphenotyped tr...
