The safeguarding capability of adults in Catholic Church ministries: A global perspective
CONCLUSIONS: We found that people in various countries and roles within the Church are at different stages of their safeguarding journey. Some are still understanding their roles (attitudes), some are still learning about how it is operationalised (awareness), and others are acquiring skills that will prepare them for enacting safeguarding policies and practices (confidence).PMID:38677176 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106801 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

The antiquity and ancestral origin of humans in the americas: a five hundred year inquiry from a biological anthropology perspective
J Anthropol Sci. 2024 Apr 26;102. doi: 10.4436/JASS.10201. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe questions -When did humans arrive in the Americas? Who were they, or from where did they come from? -are enduring and fascinating inquiries that have been approached from different perspectives, thanks to the contributions of archaeology, biological anthropology, and linguistics, among other disciplines. As a result, and after several centuries of studies, this body of research inspired several proposed models on the peopling of the Americas. These models are not only equally unique from each other but also distinct from the curren...

Chronic respiratory disease in Indigenous peoples: a framework to address inequity and strengthen respiratory health and health care globally
Lancet Respir Med. 2024 Apr 24:S2213-2600(24)00008-0. doi: 10.1016/S2213-2600(24)00008-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIndigenous peoples around the world bear a disproportionate burden of chronic respiratory diseases, which are associated with increased risks of morbidity and mortality. Despite the imperative to address global inequity, research focused on strengthening respiratory health in Indigenous peoples is lacking, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. Drivers of the increased rates and severity of chronic respiratory diseases in Indigenous peoples include a high prevalence of risk factors (eg, p...

Chemical control of medically important arthropods in Panama: A systematic literature review of historical efforts
Acta Trop. 2024 Apr 25:107217. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107217. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVector-borne diseases are a major source of morbidity in Panama. Herein, we describe historical usage patterns of synthetic insecticides to control arthropod disease vectors in this country. We examine the influence of interventions by vector control programs on the emergence of insecticide resistance. Chemical control has traditionally focused on two mosquito species: Anopheles albimanus, a major regional malaria vector, and Aedes aegypti, a historical vector of yellow fever, and current vector of dengue, chikungunya, and ...

Forecasting demands of blood components based on prediction models
CONCLUSION: The forecasting models, which predicts future demands of different blood components based on historical data, can help managers to overcome the challenges of blood stock control more effectively, thereby reducing blood waste and blood shortages.PMID:38670448 | DOI:10.1016/j.tracli.2024.04.003 (Source: Transfusion Clinique et Biologique)

Orthopedic surgeons' transition into full-time practice over the last 20 years: an analysis using Ministry of Health billing data
CONCLUSION: The Ontario health care system has not expanded to support more orthopedic surgeons despite the aging and growing population; despite our growing population, the number of surgeons being trained and retained has not matched this growth. Further research needs to be done to guide optimal health human resource decision-making.PMID:38670580 | PMC:PMC11052579 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.002623 (Source: Canadian Journal of Surgery)

Prediction interval: A powerful statistical tool for monitoring patients and analytical systems
Biochem Med (Zagreb). 2024 Jun 15;34(2):020101. doi: 10.11613/BM.2024.020101. Epub 2024 Apr 15.ABSTRACTMonitoring is indispensable for assessing disease prognosis and evaluating the effectiveness of treatment strategies, both of which rely on serial measurements of patients' data. It also plays a critical role in maintaining the stability of analytical systems, which is achieved through serial measurements of quality control samples. Accurate monitoring can be achieved through data collection, following a strict preanalytical and analytical protocol, and the application of a suitable statistical method. In a stable process...

Prognostic Factors Associated with Tumor Recurrence and Overall Survival in Soft Tissue Sarcomas of the Extremities in a Colombian Reference Cancer Center
Conclusions: This cohort showed that in addition to histologic grade and tumor size, tumor persistence at the time of admission has an impact on disease recurrence, so STS should be managed by a multidisciplinary team with experience in this pathology in high-volume reference centers.PMID:38668034 | PMC:PMC11049252 | DOI:10.3390/curroncol31040131 (Source: Current Oncology)

History of development of undergraduate public health education in Bulgaria
CONCLUSION: Despite the continuous development in the organization of undergraduate PH education in Bulgaria, its content is still not fully compatible with the basic European PH services and actions. There is a growing need for wider standardization and integration of undergraduate PH education in the EU so that the specialty can reach the status of a regulated health profession similar to medicine, nursing, and others.PMID:38669158 | DOI:10.21101/cejph.a7928 (Source: Central European Journal of Public Health)
