Anxiety, depression and quality of life in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing laryngectomy: A long-term prospective evaluation
CONCLUSION: Anxiety, depression and QoL in laryngectomised patients improved at 1 year after surgery and were maintained for up to 5 years.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject Laryngectomy is associated with prolonged functional and psychological effects and has a major impact on patient quality of life (QoL). Several prospective studies evaluating the QoL in laryngectomised patients have been reported, in which significant deterioration in social functioning was found even 1 year after surgery. What this paper adds to existing knowledge One year is not a sufficient period for laryngectomised patients...

In vivo EPID-based daily treatment error identification for volumetric-modulated arc therapy in head and neck cancers with a hierarchical convolutional neural network: a feasibility study
AbstractWe proposed a deep learning approach to classify various error types in daily VMAT treatment of head and neck cancer patients based on EPID dosimetry, which could provide additional information to support clinical decisions for adaptive planning. 146 arcs from 42 head and neck patients were analyzed. Anatomical changes and setup errors were simulated in 17,820 EPID images of 99 arcs obtained from 30 patients using in-house software for model training, validation, and testing. Subsequently, 141 clinical EPID images from 47 arcs belonging to the remaining 12 patients were utilized for clinical testing. The hierarchic...

Association of Herpes simplex infection with significantly increased risk of head and neck cancer: real-world evidence of about 500,000 patients
CONCLUSION: The surprisingly strong correlation with lip, oral cavity, and pharynx neoplasms sheds new light on supposedly harmless herpes simplex infections, suggesting them as a possible new factor for risk stratification.PMID:38643367 | DOI:10.1111/ijd.17196 (Source: Herpes)

IP3R1 dysregulation via miR-200c-3p/SSFA2 axis contributes to taxol resistance in head and neck cancer
Eur J Pharmacol. 2024 Apr 18:176592. doi: 10.1016/j.ejphar.2024.176592. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHead and neck cancer (HNC) is the sixth most common malignancy worldwide. Although current modalities offer a wide variety of therapy choices, head and neck carcinoma has poor prognosis due to its diagnosis at later stages and development of resistance to current therapeutic tools. In the current study, we aimed at exploring the roles of miR-200c-3p during head and neck carcinogenesis and acquisition of taxol resistance. We analyzed miR-200c-3p levels in HNC clinical samples and cell lines using quantitative real-time poly...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1586: Th2 Cells Are Associated with Tumor Recurrence Following Radiation
This study analyzed the relationship between immune function and outcomes following radiation in HPV/p16-negative tumors to identify mechanisms of radiation resistance and prognostic immune biomarkers. A discovery cohort of 94 patients with HNSCC treated uniformly with surgery and adjuvant radiation and a validation cohort of 97 similarly treated patients were utilized. Tumor immune infiltrates were derived from RNAseq gene expression. The immune cell types significantly associated with outcomes in the discovery cohort were examined in the independent validation cohort. A positive association between high Th2 infiltration ...

The current status and future perspectives of clinical boron neutron capture therapy trials
ConclusionsMost of the existing studies have been performed with reactor-based facilities, but there is now a rapidly increasing number of linear accelerator-based BNCT sites, and the clinical research is apparently activating again. This, combined with the increased knowledge on cancer biology and novel types of oncological therapies, opens possibilities to study innovative boron carriers and to combine BNCT with modern oncological therapies in the future clinical trials.  To conduct larger phase III trials, multicenter approaches are encouraged to be applied, keeping in mind the importance of joint instructions and qual...

Multi-omics analysis of immune-related microbiome and prognostic model in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
ConclusionsThis study offers a comprehensive exploration of the ICI landscape in HNSCC. We provide a detailed scenario of immune regulation in HNSCC and report a correlation between differing ICI patterns, intratumor microbiome, and prognosis. This research aids in identifying prime candidates for optimizing treatment strategies in HNSCC.Clinical relevanceThis study revealed the microbial signatures associated with immunophenotyping of HNSCC and further found the microbial signatures associated with prognosis. The prognostic model based on IRM microbes is helpful for early prediction of patient prognosis and assisting clin...

The indirect costs of human papillomavirus-related cancer in Central and Eastern Europe: years of life lost and productivity costs
CONCLUSIONS: There is a high disease burden of HPV-related cancer-related deaths in the CEE region, with a large economic impact to society due to substantial productivity losses. It is critical to implement and reinforce public health measures with the aim to reduce the incidence of HPV-related diseases, and the subsequent premature cancer deaths. Improving HPV screening and increasing vaccination programs, in both male and female populations, could help reduce this burden.PMID:38638098 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2341572 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)
