Medical Student Survey Study for Psychiatrists and Psychiatry Residents
Hello everyone! I am a medical student working on a project to understand the role and experiences of psychiatrists with head and neck cancer patients. To do this, we have a survey about experiences (or lack of experience) with head and neck cancer patients. If you work in psychiatry, I would greatly appreciate your help with this 5-10 minute survey. Thank you for your help! USC Psychiatrist Experiences with HNC Survey I've attached our IRB approval per SDN's policy on posting... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Skin cancer path
How do your pathologists report out squamous cell cancer, particularly from head and neck? We get: 1) the fact that it is squamous 2) margins negative or positive Nothing else - no size, no PNI, no grade, no LVSI, no DOI. And, this is not the first place that does this. I have been at least 3 centers that report it out this way. What do your pathologists do? The CAP for squamous cell of the head and neck says all this should be reported out. head and neck reirradiation
I have a pt who was treated 2 years ago elsewhere with CRT for a base of tongue cancer. He has since failed in the BOT/AE fold and has b/l neck nodes positive. He underwent laser excision of the AE fold/BOT tumor with positive margins and LND with 2/19 nodes positive (one from each neck). How would people treat? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Best perio programs for implants & thirds. Is there such a thing?
Hello everyone, I'm a gp, been in practice for a few years. I'm young, and I want to go to residency to specialize and "become an expert in dentoalveolar surgery" (implants, grafting, thirds, alveoloplasty, etc.). I've been debating between omfs and perio. Based on what I know, there are drastic differences in the two residencies. OMFS obviously steps way outside of "just dentistry" and is very hospital based, takes a lot of facial trauma call, head and neck infections, cancer, etc. I'll be... avoiding opioid use in cancer surgery
Some of my colleagues have been avoiding opioids altogether (and using ketamine) for cancer surgery, based on some animal and in-vitro studies showing that opioids may lead to immunosuppression of protective mechanisms and may increase risk of cancer recurrence. From what I've read it is mostly with morphine and there has not been any RCTs performed for this. I haven't jumped on the bandwagon on this. Most of the attendings here like to use remi for head and neck, other surgeries where... avoiding opioid use in cancer surgery (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Will researching in ENT/Plastics look weird to OMFS programs?
Hi all, I want to pursue OMFS and am currently trying to figure out what kind of research I should do to help my app. The obvious choice would be researching in my schools OMFS Department, however our program is not research oriented at all. In fact it is very rare for dental students to do research projects with our oral surgery staff. Additionally, the program is not as full scope and leans heavily towards dentoalveolar + some orthognathics. Head and neck cancer, cosmetics and trauma is... Question about Head and Neck Cancers and Immunotherapy
In my cancer immunology class, we discussed immunotherapies for various head and neck cancers. We had a surgical oncologist come in and talk about his work as well. What I'm curious about is, how will immunotherapies affect surgical treatment of H&N cancers? Will it render surgical intervention obsolete or will it help surgeons more easily resect the tumors? Why are benzos not used as a harm reduction method for alcohol use disorder?
At first glance this sounds like a dumb idea but I can't think of anything wrong with it. In people with moderate to severe alcohol use disorder, why do we not prescribe benzos as a means to give people their GABA kick in the hopes they do not use alcohol? From my understanding, besides the addiction aspect the vast majority of negative health effects from alcohol come from the toxicity of alcohol itself. It increases cancer risk in basically every body part it touches (head and neck... Why are benzos not used as a harm reduction method for alcohol use disorder? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Tomo better than RapidArc
Clinical Outcomes of Several IMRT Techniques for Patients With Head and Neck Cancer: A Propensity Score–Weighted Analysis Filed under "How'd I Miss This." You know you wonder about these things. In your mind you think every IMRT/VMAT treatment machine is just a scalpel: a blade is a blade is a blade. Maybe not? I don't know. The study can't answer the question definitively. But still. Pretty interesting result I... Tomo better than RapidArc (Source: Student Doctor Network)

ENT Surgical Oncology / Future of the Field
Hey everyone, I was curious what you all thought about the the future of head and neck surgical oncology? Some physicians mentioned that a lot of head and neck cancers are being treated primarily with radiation and Head and Neck surgeons are playing less of a role in treatment. I guess what I'm really getting at is how do you think the ENT's role in surgical oncology will change over the coming years? Especially with the epidemiological changes in cancers (decrease in smoking and increase... ENT Surgical Oncology / Future of the Field (Source: Student Doctor Network)
