Screening and verification of antiviral compounds against HSV-1 using a method based on a plaque inhibition assay
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection is a common viral disease that mainly causes oral lesions, but can also cause genital lesions in some instances. Current treatments with nucleoside analogs are lim... (Source: BMC Infectious Diseases)

A fur plucking model to study herpes simplex virus reactivation and recurrent disease
bioRxiv. 2023 Dec 6:2023.12.06.570385. doi: 10.1101/2023.12.06.570385. Preprint.ABSTRACTHerpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and HSV-2) most commonly cause ulcerative epithelial lesions (cold sores, genital herpes). Importantly, HSV establishes life-long persistent (latent) infection in sensory neurons. Reactivation from latency produces recurrent epithelial lesions, which constitute the greatest burden of HSV disease in people. The mechanisms that regulate latency and reactivation remain poorly understood, in part due to limitations in the animal models available for studying HSV reactivation. We have developed a simple and trac...

Development of recombinant rotavirus carrying herpes simplex virus 2 glycoprotein D gene based on reverse genetics technology
In this study, we sought to develop simian RV (SA11) as a vector to express HSV-2 glycoprotein D (gD2) and evaluated its immunogenicity in mice. We generated the recombinant SA11-gD2 virus (rSA11-gD2) and confirmed its ability to express gD2 in vitro. The virus was orally inoculated into suckling BALB/c mice and into 8-week-old mice. Serum IgG and IgA titers against RV and gD2 were measured by ELISA. In the 8-week-old mice inoculated with rSA11-gD2, significant increases in not only antibodies against RV but also IgG against gD2 were demonstrated. In the suckling mice, antibodies against RV were induced, but gD2 antibody w...

Is the level of varicella-zoster virus IgG associated with symptomatic status of genital herpes simplex virus infection? A case-control study
CONCLUSION: There is a strong association between average higher varicella-zoster virus (VZV) IgG level and being an asymptomatic carrier of herpes simplex sirus (HSV)1&2. A feasibility study to assess the use of the VZV vaccine as a treatment of HSV is planned.PMID:38093464 | DOI:10.1177/09564624231221172 (Source: Herpes)

Understanding the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA) reporting of herpes simplex virus (HSV) adverse events in atopic dermatitis clinical trials
Arch Dermatol Res. 2023 Dec 12;316(1):41. doi: 10.1007/s00403-023-02758-4.ABSTRACTDrug efficacy is best evaluated by randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trials; however, safety is harder to assess. The Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA) is used to track and categorize adverse events (AE) during clinical trials. Recent atopic dermatitis (AD) clinical trials were reviewed to illustrate how an understanding of MedDRA may be helpful when evaluating the rates and nature of adverse events related to herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. All completed AD clinical trials (excluding phase I studies) wit...

Trends in genital ulcer disease: An observational study at a tertiary care teaching hospital
Conclusion: This study represents the increasing burden of viral GUDs compared to the last three decades. The ulcerative sexually transmitted infection facilitates the transmission of HIV. In this HIV era, there is a need for increased efforts toward acknowledgment, safe sexual practices, periodic screening, and sexual health awareness programs in the high-risk population. The profile of sexually transmitted infections of men who have sex with men: A tertiary care center-based comparative cross-sectional study
Conclusions: There was an increasing trend of MSM attending the STI clinic from the year 2017. MSM persons are likely to be younger, unmarried, and have more than two sex partners. The commonest STI among MSM was syphilis. (Source: Indian Journal of Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

HSD121 Study of Effective Treatment of Genital Herpes in Women in Ukraine
Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), characterized by lifelong infection, periodic reactivation. Worldwide, more than 400 million people have genital herpes caused by HSV-2. For patients with genital HSV-1 infection or those with asymptomatic HSV-2 infection, suppressive therapy may be considered for those with significant psychosocial distress due to genital herpes and suspected sexual partner infection. There are several strategies for the use of antiherpetic drugs (acyclovir, famciclovir, valacyclovir), which have been studied and tested in cases of first infect...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 2340: Flavonoids with Anti-Herpes Simplex Virus Properties: Deciphering Their Mechanisms in Disrupting the Viral Life Cycle
san The herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a double-stranded DNA human virus that causes persistent infections with recurrent outbreaks. HSV exists in two forms: HSV-1, responsible for oral herpes, and HSV-2, primarily causing genital herpes. Both types can lead to significant complications, including neurological issues. Conventional treatment, involving acyclovir and its derivatives, faces challenges due to drug resistance. This underscores the imperative for continual research and development of new drugs, with a particular emphasis on exploring the potential of natural antivirals. Flavonoids have demonstrated promise in...
