Cutaneous infections from viral sources in solid organ transplant recipients
CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of cutaneous viral infections in SOTRs is directly associated with the duration and intensity of immunosuppressive therapy. Patients at higher risk were those taking drugs with a stronger impact on cellular immunity and/or those on an immunosuppressive regimen comprising various drugs.PMID:37085124 | DOI:10.1016/j.trim.2023.101838 (Source: Transplant Immunology)

High seroprevalence of syphilis and genital herpes in migrants in transit in Chiapas, MexicoAlta soropreval ência de sífilis e herpes genital em migrantes em trânsito por Chiapas, México
CONCLUSIONS: A high prevalence of syphilis and HSV-2 was found among the migrant population evaluated. Syphilis is confirmed as a re-emerging infection, even in women. Migrants have vulnerabilities associated with sexual behavior, so prevention, diagnosis, and treatment measures should be focused on this population group.PMID:37082541 | PMC:PMC10100594 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2023.71 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

NK cell-derived extracellular granzyme B drives epithelial ulceration during HSV-2 genital infection
Cell Rep. 2023 Apr 17;42(4):112410. doi: 10.1016/j.celrep.2023.112410. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGenital herpes is characterized by recurrent episodes of epithelial blistering. The mechanisms causing this pathology are ill defined. Using a mouse model of vaginal herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) infection, we show that interleukin-18 (IL-18) acts upon natural killer (NK) cells to promote accumulation of the serine protease granzyme B in the vagina, coinciding with vaginal epithelial ulceration. Genetic loss of granzyme B or therapeutic inhibition by a specific protease inhibitor reduces disease and restores epithelial int...

Association between human papillomavirus infection and common sexually transmitted infections, and the clinical significance of different < em > Mycoplasma < /em > subtypes
This study aimed to assess the correlations between common STIs and HPV infection, and to investigate the clinical significance of Mycoplasma subtypes.METHODS: We recruited 1,175 patients undergoing cervical cancer screening at the Peking University First Hospital gynecological clinic from March 2021 to February 2022 for vaginitis and cervicitis tests. They all received HPV genotyping and detection of STIs, and 749 of them underwent colposcopy and cervical biopsy.RESULTS: Aerobic vaginitis/desquamative inflammatory vaginitis and STIs (mainly single STIs) were found significantly more often in the HPV-positive group than in...

Retrospective testing for the presence of monkeypox virus in a high-risk population from February-June 2022 in Alberta, Canada
CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicate that circulation of MPXV in a higher-risk population in Alberta, prior to the first case, was less likely. We recommend that other provinces/territories review their local epidemiology, context and resources prior to conducting similar studies.PMID:37008576 | PMC:PMC10052911 | DOI:10.3138/jammi-2022-0024 (Source: Herpes)

An Ulcer by Any Other Name: Non-herpes and Non-syphilis Ulcerative Sexually Transmitted Infections
Infect Dis Clin North Am. 2023 Mar 31:S0891-5520(23)00015-6. doi: 10.1016/j.idc.2023.02.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe myriad presentations of ulcerative sexually transmitted infections, other than genital herpes and syphilis, challenge even the most astute clinician given the considerable overlap in clinical presentation and lack of widely available diagnostic resources, such as nucleic acid testing, to confirm the diagnosis. Even so, case prevalence is relatively low, and incidence of chancroid and granuloma inguinale are declining. These diseases still cause substantial morbidity and increased chance for HIV acq...

Investigating the Safety and Efficacy of the Synthetic Drug Herbix on Immune Responses Involved in the Treatment of a Mouse Model of Herpes Simplex Virus
In this study, 25 male BALB/c mice were used to conduct a mouse model of herpes by subcutaneously injecting an HSV-1 suspension (100 µL of 1× PFU/mL). The mice were divided into 5 groups with groups 1 to 3 designated as intervention groups, and groups 4 and 5 serving as positive and negative control groups, respectively. After 2 days of virus inoculation, the mice were treated with different concentrations of Herbix (100, 200, and 300 mg/mL) via subcutaneous injection. Mice Blood samples (0.5 to 1 mL) were taken from the mice before and after the experiments, and after three-week follow-up period, the mice were sacrifice...
