The Chinese herbal prescription JZ-1 promotes extracellular vesicle production and protects against herpes simplex virus type 2 infection in vitro
CONCLUSION: JZ-1 had an anti-HSV-2 efficacy. After JZ-1 stimulation, VK2/E6E7 cells secreted extracellular vesicles which protect host cells from HSV-2 infection. High-throughput sequencing showed that these extracellular vesicles contained a large number of miRNAs targeting PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. JZ-1 group extracellular vesicles could inhibit the activation of AKT/mTOR pathway and induce the host cells autophagy.PMID:38495169 | PMC:PMC10940933 | DOI:10.1016/j.heliyon.2024.e27019 (Source: Herpes)

GSE261599 Therapeutic Prime/Pull Vaccination of HSV-2 Infected Guinea Pigs with the Ribonucleotide Reductase 2 (RR2) and CXCL11 boosts TRM and TEM CD4+/CD8+ T cells to protect from recurrent genital herpes
Contributors : Afshana Quadiri ; Swayam Prakash ; Lbachir BenMohamedSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Cavia porcellusFollowing acute herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection, the virus undergoes an asymptomatic latent infection of sensory neurons of dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Chemical and physical stress cause intermittent virus reactivation from latently infected DRG and recurrent virus shedding in the genital mucosal epithelium causing genital herpes in symptomatic patients. While T-cells appear to play a role in controlling virus reactivation from DRG and reducing the sev...

Interferon lambda restricts herpes simplex virus skin disease by suppressing neutrophil-mediated pathology
mBio. 2024 Mar 1:e0262323. doi: 10.1128/mbio.02623-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTType III interferons (IFN-λ) are antiviral and immunomodulatory cytokines that have been best characterized in respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, but the effects of IFN-λ against skin infections have not been extensively investigated. We sought to define the skin-specific effects of IFN-λ against the highly prevalent human pathogen, herpes simplex virus (HSV). We infected mice lacking the IFN-λ receptor (Ifnlr1-/-), both the IFN-λ and the IFN-α/β receptors (Ifnar1-/-Ifnlr1-/-), or IFN-λ cytokines (Ifnl2/3-/-) and found th...

Dermatology Images: Herpes simplex
Herpes simplex virus infection is characterized by grouped vesicles on an erythematous background, which may progress into erosions, punctate ulcerations, or white macerated vesicles resembling pustules. In immunosuppressed individuals, chronic progressive ulcers with rolled pearly scalloped borders are characteristic.1 Herpes simplex virus-1 is usually associated with orofacial infections and may produce ocular infection and encephalitis, whereas herpes simplex virus-2 usually causes genital infections which can be transmitted sexually and from mothers to neonates (Figs 1-7). Seroepidemiology of Herpes Simplex Viruses Type 1 and 2 in Pregnant Women in Croatia
Conclusions: HSV-1 infection is widely prevalent among pregnant women with a stable trend over time. However, a declining trend in the HSV-2 seroprevalence was observed compared to 2005-2010. Serological screening in pregnant women is important in identifying seronegative women who are susceptible to HSV infection as well as seropositive women who are at risk for genital herpes recurrence during delivery.PMID:38399571 | PMC:PMC10890541 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60020284 (Source: Herpes)

Herpes Simplex Virus: A Practical Guide to Diagnosis, Management, and Patient Counseling for the Primary Care Clinician
Med Clin North Am. 2024 Mar;108(2):311-323. doi: 10.1016/j.mcna.2023.08.016. Epub 2023 Oct 8.ABSTRACTGenital herpes is a chronic, lifelong sexually transmitted viral infection, which can cause recurrent, self-limited genital ulcers. It is caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and type 2 viruses. Genital HSV infection is a very prevalent STI, which causes self-limited, recurrent genital ulcers. Treatment decreases duration of symptoms and signs and can be provided as episodic or suppressive therapy. Genital herpes can have a substantial impact during pregnancy and on sexual health in general. Counseling on natural his...
