Revisiting the therapeutic potential of homeopathic medicine Rhus Tox for herpes simplex virus and inflammatory conditions
CONCLUSION: The homeopathic medicine Rhus Tox has no cytotoxicity observed under in vitro conditions and can be used to treat herpes infection. Further studies are needed to confirm the results under in vitro and in vivo conditions as well as in clinical trials.PMID:37421729 | DOI:10.1016/j.jaim.2023.100739 (Source: Herpes)

Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Active Component Service Members, U.S. Armed Forces, 2014-2022
This report summarizes incidence rates and trends of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) from 2014 to 2022 among active component service members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The data compiled for this report are derived from medical surveillance of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis as nation-ally notifiable diseases. Case data for 2 additional STIs, human papilloma virus (HPV) and genital herpes simplex virus (HSV), are also presented. Since 2019 case rates for all STIs have declined, excluding syphilis, which declined briefly but rose among male and female service members by approximately 40% between 2020 and 2022. Over...

Triaging cases of fever with vesicular rash relevant to the monkeypox epidemic
Trop Doct. 2023 Jul 4:494755231185616. doi: 10.1177/00494755231185616. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFever with a vesicular rash is a common clinical scenario and monkeypox (MPX) characteristically presents as a fever with a vesiculopustular rash. The clinical morphology of MPX mimics many infectious and non-infectious disorders, and narrowing down the differentials of vesiculopustular rash necessitates thorough history taking and physical examination. The clinical evaluation involves the assessment of the primary skin lesions, sites of involvement, distribution, number and size of lesions, and pattern of progression of th...

Tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and anti-herpetic activity of orally administered BX795
In this study, we evaluated acute and short-term toxicity of orally administered BX795 at a concentration of 400 and 100 mg/kg respectively in mice. This was followed by an evaluation of pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution of BX795 on intravenous and oral administration. Based on these studies, we performed an in vivo antiviral study using murine models of ocular HSV-1 and genital HSV-2 infection. Our results indicate that orally administered BX795 is very well tolerated, had oral bioavailability of 56%, and reached ocular and genital tissues within the first 15 min of dosing. Our studies indicate that BX795 administe...

Randomized controlled phase IIa clinical trial of safety, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of tenofovir and tenofovir plus levonorgestrel releasing intravaginal rings used by women in Kenya
CONCLUSION: TFV/LNG and TFV-only IVRs were safe and well tolerated among Kenyan women. Pharmacokinetics and markers of protection against HIV-1, HSV-2, and unintended pregnancy suggest the potential for clinical efficacy of the multipurpose TFV/LNG IVR.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT03762382 [https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03762382].PMID:37383290 | PMC:PMC10293630 | DOI:10.3389/frph.2023.1118030 (Source: Herpes)

Oral HPV Infection in Women with HPV-Positive Cervix Is Closely Related to Oral Sex
Diagnostics (Basel). 2023 Jun 16;13(12):2096. doi: 10.3390/diagnostics13122096.ABSTRACTThe oral transmission of HPV and, consequently, the risk of oral cancer has increased in the last years. Oral sex has often been implicated among the risk factors for oral HPV infections, however, there is still no consensus on these topics, nor on the relationship between genital and oral HPV infections. The present study aimed to evaluate the coexistence of papilloma virus, at the levels of the oral and genital mucosa, in women with a histologically confirmed HPV lesions (and a positive HPV test) at the genital level and a negative HPV...

The Association Between Female Genital Schistosomiasis and Other Infections of the Lower Genital Tract in Adolescent Girls and Young Women: A Cross-Sectional Study in South Africa
CONCLUSIONS: Female genital schistosomiasis was the second most common genital infection after herpes simplex virus. Human papillomavirus infection was significantly associated with FGS, but Chlamydia was negatively associated with FGS. Women with FGS may have had more frequent contact with the health system for genital discharge. The results show the importance of the inclusion of FGS in the national management protocols for genital infections in areas endemic for S. haematobium and highlight a more comprehensive approach to diagnosis and genital disease management.PMID:37379442 | DOI:10.1097/LGT.0000000000000756 (Source: Herpes)
