Oral HPV Infection in Women with HPV-Positive Cervix Is Closely Related to Oral Sex
Diagnostics (Basel). 2023 Jun 16;13(12):2096. doi: 10.3390/diagnostics13122096.ABSTRACTThe oral transmission of HPV and, consequently, the risk of oral cancer has increased in the last years. Oral sex has often been implicated among the risk factors for oral HPV infections, however, there is still no consensus on these topics, nor on the relationship between genital and oral HPV infections. The present study aimed to evaluate the coexistence of papilloma virus, at the levels of the oral and genital mucosa, in women with a histologically confirmed HPV lesions (and a positive HPV test) at the genital level and a negative HPV...

The Evaluation and Treatment of an Infant Exposed to Nongenital HSV-2: A Case Report
Adv Neonatal Care. 2023 Jun 29. doi: 10.1097/ANC.0000000000001087. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Pregnant persons with a primary genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection can transfer HSV to the fetus or infant through the placenta or birth canal, which can cause significant infant morbidity or mortality. Primary nongenital infections with HSV-1 or HSV-2 in pregnant persons and the risk of infant infection are not well documented, leaving the clinician to make non-evidence-based decisions on evaluation and treatment in such presentations.CLINICAL FINDINGS: A term newborn was delivered vaginally by a pregnant...

Inhibition Effects and Mechanisms of Marine Polysaccharide PSSD against Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2
In this study, the anti-HSV-2 activities of PSSD, a marine sulfated polysaccharide, was deeply explored both in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that PSSD had marked anti-HSV-2 activities in vitro with low cytotoxicity. PSSD can directly interact with virus particles to inhibit the adsorption of virus to the cell surface. PSSD may also interact with virus surface glycoproteins to block virus-induced membrane fusion. Importantly, PSSD can significantly attenuate the symptoms of genital herpes and weight loss in mice after gel smear treatment, as well as reducing the titer of virus shedding in the reproductive tract of ...

Contemporary Trends in Cesarean Delivery Rates and Indications
Conclusion Despite changes in labor management definitions and guidelines encouraging vaginal birth, the rates of overall cesarean delivery did not decrease over time. The indications for delivery, particularly failed labor, repeat cesarean delivery, and malpresentation have not significantly changed over time. Topical formulations containing Trichilia catigua extract as therapeutic options for a genital and an acyclovir-resistant strain of herpes recurrent infection
Braz J Microbiol. 2023 Jun 20. doi: 10.1007/s42770-023-01027-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) infect, respectively, 67% and 13% of the world population, most commonly causing mild symptoms, such as blisters/ulcers. However, severe conditions such as keratitis, encephalitis, and systemic infections may occur, generally associated with the patient's immunological condition. Although Acyclovir® (ACV) and its analogs are the reference drugs for herpetic infections, the number of ACV-resistant HSV infections is growing exponentially. Therefore, new natural products' bioact...

Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis of infancy
A 3-week-old male neonate presented to the dermatology department with 5 days of progressively increasing pustules on the scalp and face. The mother was in good condition during pregnancy and had no history of varicella, syphilis, genital herpes or vaginal candidiasis. The baby was irritable, afebrile and without lymphadenopathy. A large number of isolated or clustered pustules on an erythematous background were found on the scalp and face (figure 1). Immediate Gram stain and potassium hydroxide preparation of the pustular contents, including cultures for bacteria and fungi, were negative. Wright stain showed a number of e...

Antiherpetic Activity of Taurisolo < sup > ® < /sup > , a Grape Pomace Polyphenolic Extract
Microorganisms. 2023 May 20;11(5):1346. doi: 10.3390/microorganisms11051346.ABSTRACTHerpes simplex virus (HSV) is widespread in the population, causing oral or genital ulcers and, rarely, severe complications such as encephalitis, keratitis, and neonatal herpes. Current available anti-HSV drugs are acyclovir and its derivatives, although long-term therapy with these agents can lead to drug resistance. Thus, the discovery of novel antiherpetic compounds merits additional studies. In recent decades, much scientific effort has been invested in the discovery of new synthetic or natural compounds with promising antiviral proper...

Disease parameters following ocular herpes simplex virus type 1 infection are similar in male and female BALB/C mice
PLoS One. 2023 Jun 15;18(6):e0287194. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0287194. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTSex related differences in the incidence or severity of infection have been described for multiple viruses. With herpes simplex viruses, the best example is HSV-2 genital infection where women have a higher incidence of infection and can have more severe infections than men. HSV-1 causes several types of infections including skin and mucosal ulcers, keratitis, and encephalitis in humans that do not appear to have a strong biological sex component. Given that mouse strains differ in their MHC loci it is important to determine i...
