Acute Herpes Simplex Virus Laryngitis Presenting as Airway Obstruction Post Influenza: A Viral Pneumonia
We present a case of HSV laryngitis in a 71-year-old female who presented with septic shock, acute renal failure, and acute hypoxic respiratory failure secondary to Influenza A and bacterial pneumonia for which she required intubation. The hospitalization course included extubation failures due to stridor, a positive cuff leak test resulting in an open tracheostomy, and a laryngeal biopsy confirming HSV infection, which was successfully treated with acyclovir.PMID:37872902 | PMC:PMC10590468 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.45742 (Source: Herpes)

Molecular Characterization of Genital and Extragenital Lesions With the PlexPCR VHS Assay in Patients Diagnosed With Syphilis
CONCLUSIONS: Since the PlexPCR VHS detects multiple organisms simultaneously, it can help to confirm actual syphilis and identify other pathogen coinfections or the pathogen causing the ulcer.PMID:37869408 | PMC:PMC10588620 | DOI:10.1093/ofid/ofad483 (Source: Herpes)

Dramatic Shift in the Etiology of Genital Ulcer Disease Among Patients Visiting a Sexually Transmitted Infections Clinic in Lilongwe, Malawi
CONCLUSIONS: We observed a dramatic increase in syphilis ulcer proportion in a population whose GUDs were previously HSV predominant. Observed differences in etiology and resolution by HIV status could play an important role in the ongoing transmission and treatment evaluation of GUD.PMID:37824787 | DOI:10.1097/OLQ.0000000000001853 (Source: Herpes)

Oral Self-Nanoemulsifying System Containing Ionic Liquid of BX795 Is Effective against Genital HSV-2 Infection in Mice
ACS Infect Dis. 2023 Oct 9. doi: 10.1021/acsinfecdis.3c00212. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBX795 is an emerging drug candidate that has shown a lot of promise as a next-generation non-nucleoside antiviral agent for the topical treatment of herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type-2 (HSV-2) infections. Our studies indicated that BX795 has limited oral bioavailability, which could be attributed to its low and pH-dependent solubility. Lipid-based formulations such as self-nanoemulsifying systems (SNESs) can improve the solubility and oral bioavailability of BX795, but the poor lipid solubility of BX7...

Herpes Simplex Virus
Genital herpes is a chronic, lifelong sexually transmitted viral infection, which can cause recurrent, self-limited genital ulcers. It is caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and type 2 viruses. Genital HSV infection is a very prevalent STI, which causes self-limited, recurrent genital ulcers. Treatment decreases duration of symptoms and signs and can be provided as episodic or suppressive therapy. Genital herpes can have a substantial impact during pregnancy and on sexual health in general. Counseling on natural history, transmission, treatment, and management of sexual partners is an integral part of management of...

Diagnostic Methods and Management Strategies of Herpes Simplex and Herpes Zoster Infections
Herpesviruses are medium-sized double-stranded DNA viruses. Of more than 80 herpesviruses identified, only 9 human herpesviruses have been found to cause infection in humans. These include herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), human cyto-megalovirus (HCMV), Epstein –Barr virus (EBV), and human herpesvirus (HHV-6A, HHV-6B, HHV-7, HHV-8). HSV-1, HSV-2, and VZV can be problematic given their characteristic neurotropism which is the ability to invade via fusion of its plasma membrane and reside within neural tissue. HSV and VZV primarily infect mucocutaneous sur faces and remain late...

Chronic recurrent urticaria in a patient with recurrent herpes labialis: complete remission after administration of aciclovir and antihistamines
We present a 41-year-old female patient with chronic recurrent urticaria associated with angioedema and bronchospasm, in whom her herpes genitalis was found to be concurrent within the history and clinical examination. According to the history, the herpes was also recurrent and dated back about a year. Chlamydia trachomatis infection was also found, with serological findings corresponding to vaginal discomfort. Treatment with acyclovir 400mg thrice daily for an initial period of 7 days in combination with desloratadine 5mg daily was started as we observed complete remission of the urticarial rash. Due to worsening vaginal ...

Role of cystoscopy as primary initial investigation in interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome
CONCLUSION: Our study found that Cystoscopy, if employed in initial investigation can help early detection of ulcerative variety of IC/BPS and can act as therapeutic modality by using fulguration plus hydrodistension. Larger comparative studies are needed for diagnostic/Therapeutic value of cystoscopy.PMID:37776017 | DOI:10.1177/03915603231203431 (Source: Herpes)
