French national survey on breast cancer care: caregiver and patient views
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides an updated analysis of breast cancer care pathways in France. Overall, the initial processes of diagnosis, announcement, and treatment were swift and were in agreement with the best care standards. No barriers to accessing care were identified. Based on the study findings, we proposed several strategies to improve the quality of care for patients in supportive care, coordination with primary care physicians, reconstructive surgery, and fertility preservation access.PMID:38635135 | DOI:10.1007/s12282-024-01576-4 (Source: Breast Cancer)

A multicentric randomized controlled phase III trial of adaptive and 18F-FDG-PET-guided dose-redistribution in locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (ARTFORCE)
CONCLUSION: Adaptive and dose redistributed radiotherapy enabled dose-escalation with similar toxicity rates compared to conventional radiotherapy. While FDG-PET-guided dose-escalation did overall not lead to significant tumor control or survival improvements, post-hoc results showed improved locoregional control for patients with N0-1 disease or oropharyngeal cancer treated with rRT.PMID:38636708 | DOI:10.1016/j.radonc.2024.110281 (Source: Radiotherapy and Oncology : journal of the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology)

Asthma patients' and physicians' perspectives on the burden and management of asthma: post-hoc analysis of APPaRENT 1 and 2 to assess predictors of treatment adherence
CONCLUSIONS: Results revealed an important disconnect between patient and physician treatment goals and treatment adherence, suggesting that strategies for improving patient adherence to maintenance medication are needed, focusing on younger patients with milder disease. High reliever use despite good adherence may indicate poor disease control. Personalised care considering patient characteristics alongside physician training in motivational communication and shared decision-making could improve patient management and outcomes.PMID:38636683 | DOI:10.1016/j.rmed.2024.107637 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Sudden peak in tetrodotoxin in French oysters during the summer of 2021: Source investigation using microscopy, metabarcoding and droplet digital PCR
Toxicon. 2024 Apr 16;243:107721. doi: 10.1016/j.toxicon.2024.107721. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent neurotoxin causing human intoxications from contaminated seafood worldwide and is of emerging concern in Europe. Shellfish have been shown to contain varying TTX concentrations globally, with concentrations typically higher in Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas in Europe. Despite many decades of research, the source of TTX remains unknown, with bacterial or algal origins having been suggested. The aim of this study was to identify potential source organisms causing TTX contamination in Pacific oy...

Honey bee stressor networks are complex and dependent on crop and region
Curr Biol. 2024 Apr 15:S0960-9822(24)00379-8. doi: 10.1016/j.cub.2024.03.039. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHoney bees play a major role in crop pollination but have experienced declining health throughout most of the globe. Despite decades of research on key honey bee stressors (e.g., parasitic Varroa destructor mites and viruses), researchers cannot fully explain or predict colony mortality, potentially because it is caused by exposure to multiple interacting stressors in the field. Understanding which honey bee stressors co-occur and have the potential to interact is therefore of profound importance. Here, we used the e...

Is social deprivation associated with the peritoneal dialysis outcomes? A cohort study with REIN registry data
CONCLUSION: In PD patients, social deprivation was not associated with death or the composite event of death or transfer to HD. Socially deprived individuals had a greater risk of transfer to HD and lower access to kidney transplantation in the competing risk analysis.PMID:38632672 | DOI:10.1177/08968608241237685 (Source: Peritoneal Dialysis International)

Health-related quality of life in paediatric patients on peritoneal dialysis: Data from a tertiary centre
Perit Dial Int. 2024 Apr 17:8968608241241177. doi: 10.1177/08968608241241177. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTKidney failure has a negative impact on both children and families' quality of life (QOL). We evaluated the burden of home peritoneal dialysis (PD) using two local questionnaires and the French version of PedsQL3.0 end-stage kidney disease module and family impact module. Data are expressed as median (min-max). We reviewed the charts of 12 patients, at a median age of 8.8 (1.2-16.7) years, undergoing maintenance PD for 8 (1-42) months. Parathyroid hormone and haemoglobin levels were 215 (17-606) ng/L and 117 (104-141...

Regional practice variation in hysterectomy and the implementation of less invasive surgical procedures: A register ‐based study in the Netherlands
ConclusionsRegional variation exists in the rates of hysterectomy and minimally invasive techniques. The absence of a significant substitution effect provides no clear evidence that minimally invasive techniques have replaced hysterectomy in clinical practice. However, although the result was not significant, embolization could be an exception based on its stronger negative association. (Source: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica)

Spatial model for daily air quality high resolution estimation
AbstractIn air quality modeling, fine-scale daily mapping is generally calculated from dispersion models involving multiple parameters linked in particular to emissions, which require regular updating and a long computation time. The aim of this work is to provide a simpler model, easily adaptable to other regions and capable of estimating nitrogen dioxide concentrations to a good approximation. To this end, we examine the relationship between daily and annual nitrogen dioxide values. We find that this relationship depends on the range of daily values. Then we provide a statistical model capable of estimating daily concent...

Well-being at School of 10-year-old Students Living in France in a Bilingual Family Language Context with a Minorated Language: Role of Teacher-Student and Peer Relationship Satisfaction
AbstractResearch on the well-being at school of children living in a bilingual family language context are not very numerous. The cultural, social, and emotional challenges that their schooling implies can be complex, in particular when the family language is minorated and thus not much valued socially. The many available studies on immigrant children are generally not confronted with the problem of speaking different languages at home and at school. The present cross-sectional study was conducted with 216 children aged 10 attending school in France, and living in a monolingual family French language context (n = 103) ...

Childhood sexual abuse, risk behaviours and chemsex engagement among men who have sex with men in Paris, France
Drückler et al suggest that chemsex engagement among men who have sex with men (MSM) is significantly associated with reporting non-consensual sex.1 Inspired by clinical stories gathered in a sexual healthcare service, we investigated a possible relationship between childhood sexual abuse (CSA), that is, having been a victim of forced genital contact by an adult before age 13, and current chemsex engagement. To our knowledge, only one recent study reports a ‘higher frequency’ of early sexual abuse—but without specification of type and age of sexual abuse—among adult chemsex-users MSM.2 These...

Natural products for biocontrol: review of their fate in the environment and impacts on biodiversity
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 17. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33256-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBiocontrol solutions (macroorganisms, microorganisms, natural substances, semiochemicals) are presented as potential alternatives to conventional plant protection products (PPPs) because they are supposed to have lower impacts on ecosystems and human health. However, to ensure the sustainability of biocontrol solutions, it is necessary to document the unintended effects of their use. Thus, the objectives of this work were to review (1) the available biocontrol solutions and their regulation, (2) the contamination of the ...

A randomised multicentre study of angiography- versus physiologyguided percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with coronary artery disease undergoing TAVI: design and rationale of the FAITAVI trial
EuroIntervention. 2024 Apr 15;20(8):e504-e510. doi: 10.4244/EIJ-D-23-00679.ABSTRACTThe treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with severe aortic valve stenosis (AVS) eligible for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is not supported by clinical evidence, and the role of physiology over anatomy as well as the timing of coronary intervention are not defined. FAITAVI (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT03360591) is a nationwide prospective, open-label, multicentre, randomised controlled study comparing the angiography-guided versus the physiology-guided coronary revascularisation strategy in patients with combin...
