Health-related quality of life in patients with conditions affecting the hand: meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Pooled utility estimates for patients with untreated carpal tunnel syndrome and hand osteoarthritis are 11% and 18% lower than age-matched population norms respectively. Hand conditions have a significant detrimental impact on health-related quality of life and this study provides catalogued utility values for use in future economic analyses to support the delivery of value-based hand surgery.PMID:38593043 | DOI:10.1093/bjs/znae067 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Cardiogenic shock and chronic kidney disease: Dangerous liaisons
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiogenic shock and CKD are frequent "cross-talking" conditions with limited therapeutic options, resulting in higher rates of death at 1month and 1year. RRT is a strong predictor of death, regardless of preexisting CKD. Multidisciplinary teams involving cardiac and kidney physicians are required to provide integrated care for patients with failure of both organs.PMID:38594150 | DOI:10.1016/j.acvd.2024.01.006 (Source: Archives of Cardiovascular Diseases)

Inhaled bronchodilators for the prevention and treatment of chronic lung disease in preterm infants
CONCLUSIONS: Low-certainty evidence from one trial showed that inhaled bronchodilator prophylaxis may result in little or no difference in the incidence of mortality or CLD in preterm infants, when compared to placebo. The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of salbutamol on pneumothorax, and neither included study reported on the incidence of serious adverse effects. We identified no trials that studied the use of bronchodilator therapy for the treatment of CLD. Additional clinical trials are necessary to assess the role of bronchodilator agents in the prophylaxis or treatment of CLD. Researchers studying the effe...
