Complications of ultrasound guided very small-bore chest drains for pleural effusions of different etiology
CONCLUSIONS: A single small-bore chest drain (6-10 F) was successful in the vast majority of simple PEs, but had high complication rates in empyema with frequent need of additional drains or surgery. These findings support use of larger drains and early consultation with a thoracic surgeon in empyema.PMID:38617756 | PMC:PMC11009582 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1457 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

National and International Comparisons of Gynecological Research in Germany Based on a Bibliometric Analysis of Publications
CONCLUSION: For the German Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the results suggest a number of approaches to promote young researchers. The support provided to young female doctors is especially important as this should help to retain them as junior researchers over the long term.PMID:38618578 | PMC:PMC11006559 | DOI:10.1055/a-2200-4122 (Source: Geburtshilfe und Frauenheilkunde)

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 614: Evaluation of a Revised Point-of-Care Test for the Detection of Feline Leukaemia p27 Antigen and Anti-p15E Antibodies in Cats
This study aimed to assess this PoC test’s performance concerning FeLV p27 antigen and FeLV anti-p15E antibody detection. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (PPV, NPV) were assessed after ten minutes (recommended) and 20 min (prolonged) incubation times. The test results were evaluated as either positive or negative. Serum samples from 934 cats were included, originating from Italy (n = 269), Portugal (n = 240), Germany (n = 318), and France (n = 107). FeLV p27 antigen and anti-p15E antibodies were measured by reference standard ELISAs and compared to the PoC test results. The P...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1794: No Evidence Was Found for the Presence of Terreolides, Terreumols or Saponaceolides H-S in the Fruiting Bodies of Tricholoma terreum (Basidiomycota, Agaricales)
idari Two different collections of the gilled wild fungus Tricholoma terreum, collected in Italy, were subjected to phytochemical analysis. The fungal material was confidently identified by analysis of the ITS genomic sequences. Using both HR-LC-MS and NMR techniques, no evidence was found for the presence in the fruiting bodies of terreolides, terreumols or saponaceolides H-S, in striking contrast with the isolation of these terpenoids by Chinese authors from a mushroom collected in France and identified as T. terreum. The main cytotoxic terpenoid identified and isolated from the extracts of the specimens investigated...

Artificial intelligence-based prediction of diabetic retinopathy evolution (EviRed): protocol for a prospective cohort
Introduction An important obstacle in the fight against diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the use of a classification system based on old imaging techniques and insufficient data to accurately predict its evolution. New imaging techniques generate new valuable data, but we lack an adapted classification based on these data. The main objective of the Evaluation Intelligente de la Rétinopathie Diabétique, Intelligent evaluation of DR (EviRed) project is to develop and validate a system assisting the ophthalmologist in decision-making during DR follow-up by improving the prediction of its evolution. Methods and anal...

Management of dredged marine sediments in Southern France: main keys to large-scale beneficial re-use
This study provides an overview of the technical and regulatory aspects related to dredged marine sediment management in France and aims to identify and discuss the limits of their valorization. Dredged sediments are mainly composed of particles with heterogeneous grain size, some being known for many applications such as building materials and growing media. However, several reasons have been put forward to explain why these particles are not reused when extracted from dredged sediments. Several technical, socio-economic, and regulatory obstacles explain the low demand for dredged sediments. This demand can be stimulated ...

Air quality, metal(loi)d sources identification and environmental assessment using (bio)monitoring in the former mining district of Salsigne (Orbiel valley, France)
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 12:141974. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.141974. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe former mining district of Salsigne is situated in the Orbiel valley. Until the 20th century, it was the first gold mine in Europe and the first arsenic mine in the world. Rehabilitation has been performed during the 20 years that followed closure of the mines and factories, which led to the accumulation of storage of several million tons of waste in this valley. Nevertheless, a detailed description of the air quality of this area is still missing. The goal of the present study is to evaluate atmospheric contamination ...

Educational level and characteristics of invasive breast cancer: findings from a French prospective cohort
ConclusionIn this cohort, education was associated with BC grade and HR status but not stage at diagnosis. The link between education and BC grade was not entirely explained by the different adjustments. A specific mechanism could be at play and deserves further investigations.
