Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 481: Association between the GLP1R A316T Mutation and Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis in French Canadian and Italian Cohorts
alérie Marcil Studies have revealed anthropometric discrepancies in girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) compared to non-scoliotic subjects, such as a higher stature, lower weight, and lower body mass index. While the causes are still unknown, it was proposed that metabolic hormones could play a role in AIS pathophysiology. Our objectives were to evaluate the association of GLP1R A316T polymorphism in AIS susceptibility and to study its relationship with disease severity and progression. We performed a retrospective case–control association study with controls and AIS patients from an Italian...

Validation of the definition of rheumatoid arthritis flare based on SDAI and CDAI in clinical practice in two French independent cohorts
New definitions for flares in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) based on the Simplified and Clinical Disease Activity Indices (SDAI, CDAI) have been recently introduced.1 In this article, the authors defined flare as an absolute increase of 4.7 in SDAI and 4.5 in CDAI. Following this proposal we aimed at studying these cut-off values for absolute increases in SDAI and CDAI in diagnosing self-reported flares and treatment escalation in two separate real-world cohorts of patients with RA in France. The first cohort included 101 patients with established RA,2 recruited between May 2016 and February 2018 and annually evaluated in day ...

Do patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus included in randomised clinical trials differ from general-practice patients? A cross-sectional comparative study
Conclusions Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus cared for in general practice differ in a number of important aspects from patients included in randomised controlled trials on which clinical practice guidelines are based. This situation hampers the applicability of these guidelines. Future randomised trials should include patients who better fit the ‘average’ general-practice patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus to help improve the translation of study findings in daily practice. Postoperative radiotherapy results in 192 epithelial thymic tumours patients with 10  years of follow-up
Thymic epithelial tumours (TET) are rare and malignant tumours of the mediastinum. Due to their rarity, studies inclusion periods are long and treatment modalities have varied across time. Actual recommendations are not robust due to the lack of prospective studies. In addition, thymomas have a slow evolution and large series with a long-term follow-up are scarce [1 –5]. In France, treatment recommendations for the past 10 years, have been based on ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology) and RYHTMIC (Réseau tumeurs THYMiques et Cancer), a French network mandated to systematically discuss every case of TET in Fran...

Creation of a shared medical decision support tool for the management of abdominal aortic aneurysms
Patients with an unruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) at the surgical threshold may benefit from aneurysmal exclusion either by open surgery or endovascular repair. A patient decision aid (PtDA) could be useful to help patients and their surgeons choose between the two techniques. The aim of this study was to develop a shared medical decision support tool, in french language, for the surgical treatment of AAA. (Source: Annals of Vascular Surgery)

Helminth exposure and immune response to the two-dose heterologous Ad26.ZEBOV, MVA-BN-Filo Ebola vaccine regimen
In this study, we aimed to assess the association between helminth exposure to the most prevalent parasitic infections, schistosomiasis, soil transmitted helminths infection and filariasis, and the Ebola virus glycoprotein (EBOV GP) antibody concentration in response to vaccination with the Ad26.ZEBOV, MVA-BN-Filo vaccine regimen in African and European participants using samples obtained from three international clinical trials. Methods/Principal findingsWe conducted a study in a subset of participants in the EBL2001, EBL2002 and EBL3001 clinical trials that evaluated the Ad26.ZEBOV, MVA-BN-Filo vaccine regimen against EV...

‘It’s really a horror.’ Bones from across Europe suggest Stone Age ritual killings
In 1984, in France’s Rhône Valley, forensic anthropologist Eric Crubézy found the skeletons of three women in a Stone Age structure built to resemble a grain silo. At the 5600-year-old site, called Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, one woman was lying on her side, her knees slightly bent. The other two were contorted into unnatural positions and hidden beneath a rocky overhang, broken grindstones piled on their bodies. The 25-year-old researcher, just out of medical school, didn’t know what to make of the odd arrangement of bones. “I thought it was unique,” Crubézy recalls. It wasn’t until 40 years later...

Occupational exposure to organic solvents and the risk of developing testicular germ cell tumors (TESTIS study): Effect of combined exposure assessment on risk estimation
CONCLUSION: The results suggest that some organic solvents might be involved in the pathogenesis of TGCT among occupationally exposed men. The combined use of JEM+SQ+EA seemed to limit misclassification by considering individual exposure variability and is, therefore, an appealing approach to assess occupational exposures in epidemiological studies.PMID:38597023 | DOI:10.5271/sjweh.4161 (Source: Cancer Control)

COVID-19 Vaccine Injury Compensation Program: Lessons Learned From a Review of 10 Implementing Countries
This article reviewed the Vaccine Injury Compensation Programs in 10 major countries to present implications for improving the Korean system. Expanding the scope of national accountability is essential to compensate for the consequences of adhering to national policies during public health crises. Therefore, valuable insight can be obtained from examining the systems in Germany, Japan, and Taiwan, which have implemented more relaxed criteria for determining causality in compensation cases; Thailand's system, which provides the mandatory payment of preliminary compensation for damage caused by vaccination; systems in German...

Effects of Anterior Fundoplication on Postoperative Dysphagia and Reflux After Laparoscopic Esophagocardiomyotomy for Pediatric Achalasia
Conclusion: In this largest observation of pediatric achalasia patients, A-fundo appeared clinically insignificant when determining contributors to control GER or exacerbate postoperative dysphagia. A-fundo should not be routinely adopted in children having L-ECM for achalasia without further multicenter analysis but appears beneficial in cases having inadvertent mucosal violation.PMID:38597929 | DOI:10.1089/lap.2023.0415 (Source: Adv Data)
