Association of healthy diet score and adiposity with risk of colorectal cancer: findings from the UK Biobank prospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Adiposity-mediated effects were limited in the link between dietary patterns and CRC incidence, implying that solely addressing adiposity may not sufficiently reduce CRC risk. Interventions, such as improving dietary quality in people with adiposity or promoting weight control in those with unhealthy eating habits, may provide an effective strategy to reduce CRC risk.PMID:38693451 | DOI:10.1007/s00394-024-03418-7 (Source: Cancer Control)

Is the QCI framework suited for monitoring outcomes and costs in a teaching hospital using value-based healthcare principles? A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: The QCI framework is effective for monitoring changes in average total costs and relevant health outcomes on an institutional level. Health outcomes are associated with hospital-based costs of care.PMID:38692726 | DOI:10.1136/bmjopen-2023-080257 (Source: Cancer Control)

Evidence-based screening, clinical care and health education recommendations for Alaska Native peoples with prediabetes living in southcentral Alaska: findings from the Alaska EARTH follow-up study
This study investigated how much of the recent increase in pre-DM identified among Alaska Native (AN) peoples living in urban southcentral Alaska may be due to changes in diagnostic methods. We used clinical and demographic data collected at baseline between 2004 and 2006 and at follow-up collected between 2015 and 2017 from the urban southcentral Alaska Education and Research Towards Health (EARTH) cohort. We used descriptive statistics and logistic regression to explore differences in demographic and clinical variables among the identified pre-DM groups. Of 388 participants in the follow-up study, 243 had A1c levels indi...

Association between childhood obesity and gut microbiota: 16S rRNA gene sequencing-based cohort study
CONCLUSION: Obese children exhibited lower α-diversity in their gut microbiota than did the normal-weight children. Significant differences were observed in the composition of gut microbiota between obese and normal-weight children.PMID:38690025 | PMC:PMC11056921 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i16.2249 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology)

Association of obesity and the clinical course of hospitalised COVID ‐19 survivors
This study aimed to assess the association between obesity and the clinical courses of hospitalised COVID-19 survivors. This cross-sectional study used the Isfahan COVID Cohort (ICC) baseline data. The ICC is an ongoing, 5-year prospective, longitudinal cohort study conducted on hospitalised COVID-19 survivors in affiliated hospitals of the Medical University of Isfahan (MUI), Iran. Patients aged 19 and over throughout Isfahan County were recruited using a consecutive sampling method 1  month after discharge. Demographic and basic characteristics, symptoms and clinical features of these patients were collected and analys...

Robotic transversus abdominis release (TAR) for ventral hernia repairs is associated with low surgical site occurrence rates and length of stay despite increasing modifiable comorbidities
Conclusion2  + MCMs significantly increase the odds of SSO, specifically in patients who have a history of diabetes and obesity. However, the presence of any number of MCMs was not associated with increased odds of prolonged LOS. (Source: Hernia)

Choledocoduodenal Biliary Bypass for Recurrent Choledocholithiasis in a Patient with Gastric Bypass: An Old Trick to Solve a Modern Problem
We present a case of a 71-year-old female with recurrent choledocholithiasis post-bariatric surgery. After failed endoscopic attempts, a biliodigestive bypass with choledocoduodenal anastomosis was performed successfully using the Da Vinci robotic platform. This technique offers a single anastomosis, excluding the duodenum from transit, preventing food reflux. The patient had an uneventful recovery with no recurrence after 1 year. The choledocoduodenal anastomosis is a viable option for biliary diversion in patients with challenging endoscopic access post-gastric bypass, offering favorable outcomes. (Source: Obesity Surgery)

Unlocking the power of synergy: High-intensity functional training and early time-restricted eating for transformative changes in body composition and cardiometabolic health in inactive women with obesity
by Ranya Ameur, Rami Maaloul, S émah Tagougui, Fadoua Neffati, Faten Hadj Kacem, Mohamed Fadhel Najjar, Achraf Ammar, Omar Hammouda ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to examine the long-term effects of time-restricted eating (TRE), with or without high intensity functional training (HIFT), on body composition and cardiometabolic biomarkers among inactive women with obesity. MethodsSixty-four women (BMI = 35.03 ± 3.8 kg/m2; age = 32.1 ± 10 years) were randomly allocated to either: (1) TRE (≤8-h daily eating window, with ad libitum energy intake) group; (2) HIFT (3 sessions/week) group; or (3) TRE combined with HIF...

Gastric GDF15 levels are regulated by age, sex, and nutritional status in rodents and humans
ConclusionsOur results provide clear evidence that gastric GDF15 is a critical contributor of circulating GDF15 levels and can explain some of the metabolic effects induced by GDF15. (Source: Journal of Endocrinological Investigation)
