The Effect of Broccoli Glucoraphanin Supplementation on Ameliorating High ‐Fat‐Diet‐Induced Obesity through the Gut Microbiome and Metabolome Interface
ConclusionThese results indicate that beneficial effects of broccoli GRN on reversing HFD-induced adverse metabolic parameters may be attributed to its impacts on reprogramming microbial community and metabolites. Identification of the mechanistic functions of GRN further warrants it as a dietary candidate for obesity prevention. (Source: Molecular Nutrition and Food Research)

Impaired Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 (FGF21) Associated with Visceral Adiposity Leads to Insulin Resistance: The Core Defect in Diabetes Mellitus
Curr Diabetes Rev. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.2174/0115733998265915231116043813. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Central nervous system (CNS) is the prime regulator of signaling pathways whose function includes regulation of food intake (consumption), energy expenditure, and other metabolic responses like glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, fatty acid oxidation, and thermogenesis that have been implicated in chronic inflammatory disorders. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity are two metabolic disorders that are linked together and have become an epidemic worldwide, thus raising significant public health concerns. Fibroblast g...

Management of the Difficult Stoma
Surg Clin North Am. 2024 Jun;104(3):579-593. doi: 10.1016/j.suc.2023.11.008. Epub 2024 Jan 29.ABSTRACTFecal ostomy creation is a commonly performed procedure with many indications. Better outcomes occur when preoperative patient education and stoma site marking are provided. Despite a seemingly simple operation, ostomy creation is often difficult and complications are common. Certain risk factors, particularly obesity, are strongly associated with stoma-related complications. The ability to optimize the ostomy and stoma in the operating room and to troubleshoot frequently encountered post-operative stoma-related issues are...

The Effect of Recruitment Maneuver on Static Lung Compliance in Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia for Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Single-Centre Prospective Clinical Intervention Study
Conclusions: During laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the application of RM leads to a significant increase in Cstat and an improvement in gas exchange. The prevention of atelectasis during anesthesia should be initiated immediately after the induction of anesthesia, using protective mechanical ventilation and RM.PMID:38674312 | PMC:PMC11052059 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040666 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Osteoarthritis in Korea: A Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusions: To reduce the incidence of OA, interventions and lifestyle changes are needed to prevent the onset of disease in participants with risk factors for OA, such as older women, low education levels, and obesity.PMID:38674311 | PMC:PMC11052057 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040665 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Investigation of the Association between Bilateral Selective Anterograde Cerebral Perfusion and Postoperative Ischemic Stroke in Obese Patients with Emergency Surgery for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection
Conclusions: A patient-tailored strategy for cerebral perfusion should be considered in obese patients, considering the high atheromatous burden of the supra-aortic vessels in these patients and the potential risk of atheromatous embolization associated with this technique.PMID:38674307 | PMC:PMC11052173 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040661 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Socioeconomic and Other Risk Factors for Retear after Arthroscopic Surgery for Nontraumatic Rotator Cuff Tear
Conclusions: Age, initial tear size, and symptom duration significantly affect retear risk after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Occupation and type of medical insurance were also risk factors for retear. Socioeconomically vulnerable patients may be at a greater risk of retear. Proactive efforts are required to expand early access to medical care.PMID:38674286 | PMC:PMC11052191 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040640 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Associations of lifestyle and genetic risks with obesity and related chronic diseases in the UK Biobank: a prospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Higher LRS was associated with higher obesity prevalence and risks of related chronic diseases regardless of GRS, highlighting the broad benefits of healthy lifestyles. Additive gene-lifestyle interactions emphasize the public health importance of lifestyle interventions among people with high genetic risks.PMID:38677521 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.04.025 (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFood and nutrition-related factors have the potential to impact development of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and quality of life for people with ASD, but gaps in evidence exist. On November 10, 2022, Tufts University's Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and Food and Nutrition Innovation Institute hosted a one-day meeting to explore the evidence and evidence gaps regarding the relationships of food and nutrition with ASD. This meeting report summarizes the presentations and deliberations from the...
