Substantial Weight Loss May Not Improve Early Outcomes of Total Knee Arthroplasty in the Morbidly Obese
Body mass index (BMI) cutoffs for morbidly obese patients otherwise indicated for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have been widely proposed and implemented, though they remain controversial. Previous studies suggested that a 5% reduction in BMI may be associated with fewer postoperative complications. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine whether a substantial reduction in preoperative BMI in morbidly obese patients improved 90-day outcomes after TKA. Identification of factors associated with sarcopenic obesity development: literature review and expert panel voting
Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is defined as the combination of excess fat mass (obesity) and low skeletal muscle mass and function (sarcopenia). The identification and classification of factors related to SO would favor better prevention and diagnosis. the present article aimed to (i) define a list of factors related with SO based on literature analysis, (ii) identify clinical conditions linked with SO development from literature search and (iii) evaluate their relevance and the potential research gaps by consulting an expert panel. Spexin ameliorated obesity-related metabolic disorders through promoting white adipose browning mediated by JAK2-STAT3 pathway
Spexin, a 14 amino acid peptide, has been reported to regulate obesity and its associated complications. However, little is known about the underlying molecular mechanism. Therefore, this study aimed to invest... (Source: Nutrition and Metabolism)

Personalized anti-reflux surgery: connecting GERD phenotypes in 690 patients to outcomes
ConclusionsWe have identified distinct phenotypes based on common GERD-associated patient characteristics. With further study these phenotypes may aid surgeons in prognosticating outcomes to individual patients considering an anti-reflux procedure. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Psilocybin therapy and anorexia nervosa: a narrative review of safety considerations for researchers and clinicians
ConclusionEarly evidence suggests that psilocybin therapy is well-tolerated in individuals with AN. Understanding the unique medical complications of AN, and how they may be impacted by common physiologic adverse effects of psilocybin administration, leads to tailored risk mitigation strategies to enhance safety and tolerability of this novel intervention. Conservative Versus Operative Treatment of Proximal Humerus Fractures in Older Individuals —an Analysis of Insurance Data
CONCLUSION: The conservative treatment of proximal humerus fracture is associated with a lower overall rate of complications due to surgery or trauma, but also with more MAE and TE and higher overall mortality. These findings underline the need for individualized and risk-adjusted treatment recommendations.PMID:38652842 | DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2024.0059 (Source: Deutsches Arzteblatt International)

Detection of significant liver fibrosis in Chinese psoriasis patients receiving methotrexate: a comparison between transient elastography and liver histology

The associations of fatty acids related dietary patterns with overweight and obesity among Chinese children
CONCLUSION: Four FAs related dietary patterns were identified. The dietary pattern with high intake of fish, shrimp, crab and shellfish decreased overweight risk by increasing n-3 PUFAs, and decreasing SFAs. The dietary pattern with high intake of plant food, decreased obesity risk by providing an balanced n-6/n-3 PUFAs ratio.PMID:38654346 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-024-00549-9 (Source: Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition)

Disparities in Access to Bariatric Surgery in North Carolina
This study sought to identify factors that contribute to disparities in access to bariatric surgery in North Carolina (NC).METHODS: Using the rate of bariatric surgery in the county with the best health outcome as the reference, we calculated the Surgical Equity Index (SEI) in the remaining counties in NC.RESULTS: Approximately 2.95 million individuals (29%) were obese in NC. There were 992 (.5%) bariatric procedures performed on a population of 194 209 individuals with obesity in the Reference County (RC). The mean SEI for bariatric surgery in NC was .47 (SD .17, range .15-.95). A statistically significant difference was ...
