β-glucan mitigates ovalbumin-induced airway inflammation by preventing oxidative stress and CD8 < sup > + < /sup > T cell infiltration
CONCLUSION: The findings revealed the role of CD8+ T cells in the pathogenesis of asthma and the role of BG as a potential therapeutic agent for asthma management through the suppression of airway inflammation and oxidative stress.PMID:38603862 | DOI:10.1016/j.intimp.2024.111985 (Source: International Immunopharmacology)

Cognitive bias evaluation on the choice of treatment in common retinal disorders among retina specialists in 2023
CONCLUSION: The findings regarding the first and second line choices for the mentioned ocular disorders were found to agree with the findings of published literature currently used in practice, with a tendency to prefer ranibizumab as first line therapy for neovascular disorders and aflibercept as first line therapy for macular edema. In addition, there were no differences between choices for first and second line therapy for patients vs. ophthalmologists.PMID:38603895 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfo.2024.104177 (Source: Journal Francais d Ophtalmologie)

Effects of Dexamethasone on Postoperative Glycemic Control in Patients After Primary Total Joint Arthroplasty: A Randomized Double-Blind Controlled Trial
In patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA), the use of dexamethasone (DEX) may cause perioperative blood glucose (BG) disorders, leading to complications even in patients who do not have diabetes. We aimed to evaluate the effects of different DEX doses on perioperative BG levels. (Source: The Journal of Arthroplasty)

Small intestinal angiodysplasia and hemorrhage associated with acquired von Willebrand syndrome type 2A secondary to multiple myeloma: Reversal after treatment with IRD regimen (a case report and a brief review of the literature)
Acquired von Willebrand syndrome (AVWS) is a rare acquired hemorrhagic disorder, characterized by qualitative or quantitative deficiencies in von Willebrand factor (VWF), which is easily misdiagnosed as a genetic von Willebrand disease (VWD) and probably underdiagnosed [1,2]. Usually, the diagnosis of AVWS is complicated, and both clinical and case history evaluation as well as laboratory results are required for discerning AVWS from inherited VWD [2,3]. Here we report a case of AVWS secondary to IgA-kappa type of multiple myeloma (MM), found that the existence of anti-VWF autoantibodies (IgG type) in plasma may contribute...

Corticosteroids for the prevention and treatment of bronchopulmonary dysplasia: an overview of systematic reviews
CONCLUSIONS: This overview summarises the evidence of nine SRs investigating the effect of postnatal corticosteroids in preterm infants at risk for BPD. Late initiated (≥ seven days after birth) systemic administration of dexamethasone is considered an effective intervention to reduce the risk of BPD in infants with a high risk profile for BPD, based on a favourable balance between benefits and harms. Endotracheal instillation of corticosteroids (budesonide) with surfactant as a carrier is a promising intervention, based on the beneficial effect on desirable outcomes without (so far) negative side effects. Pending result...

Neuromedin-U Mediates Rapid Activation of Airway Group 2 Innate Lymphoid Cells in Mild Asthma
CONCLUSIONS: The NMU/NMUR1 axis stimulates rapid effects on ILC2, and maybe an important early activator of these cells in eosinophilic inflammatory responses in asthma.PMID:38598774 | DOI:10.1164/rccm.202311-2164OC (Source: American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine)

A sericin hydrogel scaffold for sustained dexamethasone release modulates macrophage polarization to promote mandibular bone defect repair in rats
CONCLUSION: The SMH-CD/DEX scaffold capable of sustained dexamethasone release promotes osteogenic differentiation of stem cells and bone defect repair in rats by regulating M2 polarization.PMID:38597445 | DOI:10.12122/j.issn.1673-4254.2024.03.15 (Source: Journal of Southern Medical University)
