[Corneal collagen cross-linking to treat infectious keratitis].
Authors: Atia R, Jouve L, Knoeri J, Georgeon C, Laroche L, Borderie V, Bouheraoua N Abstract Infectious keratitis are a frequent cause of ocular morbidity. Today, new treatments are necessary to combat the emergence of antibiotic resistant germs. Corneal collagen cross-linking has been suggested to treat corneal infectious (PACK-CXL). Its action would be both antimicrobial and protective for the cornea, increasing its biochemical resistence to proteolytic enzymes. In vivo, PACK-CXL might demonstrate good efficacy against bacterial keratitis, contrary to herpetic keratitis for which it is contraindicated. For fungal...

[Paraneoplastic Syndromes in Ophthalmology (French version of the article)].
Authors: Bussat A, Langner-Lemercier S, Salmon A, Mouriaux F Abstract Paraneoplastic syndromes involving the visual system are a heterogeneous group of disorders occurring in the setting of systemic malignancy. Although these syndromes are rare, the clinical manifestations can herald an unsuspected, underlying malignancy. The associated antibodies and histopathology of each syndrome are presented to help in the understanding of these autoimmune phenomena. Outlined in this review article are diagnostic features useful in differentiating cancer-associated retinopathy, melanoma-associated retinopathy, paraneoplastic p...

[Bilateral pseudotumoral proptosis as presenting sign of orbital hyper-IgG4-related disease].
We report a case of progressive bilateral proptosis for 4 years in a 34-year-old man. Orbital MRI showed an infiltrative process extending to the orbital fat, extraocular muscles and lacrimal glands. Lacrimal gland biopsy with immunohistochemical study showed a lymphoplasmocytic infiltrate rich in IgG4 and fibrosis. The diagnosis of orbital hyper-IgG4 syndrome was suggested. The patient responded well to systemic steroid treatment. DISCUSSION: Orbital hyper-IgG4 syndrome manifests most often as pseudo-tumoral bilateral proptosis. Elevated IgG4 levels are neither sensitive nor specific. Biopsy with immunohistochemi...

Paraneoplastic syndromes in ophthalmology.
Authors: Bussat A, Langner-Lemercier S, Salmon A, Mouriaux F Abstract Paraneoplastic syndromes involving the visual system are a heterogeneous group of disorders occurring in the setting of systemic malignancy. They are unrelated to local tumor invasion or metastasis and unexplained by nutritional, metabolic, infectious or iatrogenic causes. The presence of antibodies may aid in the diagnosis of a paraneoplastic syndrome, although this is not an absolute requirement. Chorioretinal involvement is seen in CAR (cancer-associated retinopathy) syndrome, MAR (melanoma-associated retinopathy) syndrome, paraneoplastic vite...

[Corneal endothelial cell therapy, a review].
Authors: Kocaba V, Damour O, Auxenfans C, Burillon C Abstract In France, endothelial dysfunction represents approximately one half of the indications for corneal transplants performed each year. However, the use of endothelial keratoplasty is limited by the technical difficulty of the procedure, a shortage of available grafts, and the potential for graft failure or rejection. These limitations are driving researchers to develop new, less invasive, and more effective therapies. Corneal endothelial cell therapy is being explored as a potential therapeutic measure, to avoid the uncertainty associated with grafting. Th...

[Transient monocular blindness: Vascular causes and differential diagnoses].
Authors: Bidot S, Biotti D Abstract Transient monocular blindness is an acute episode of ischemic origin in which one eye has profound visual loss, followed by full recovery within one hour. Transient monocular blindness most often occurs in the setting of retinal ischemia secondary to carotid embolism, but other mechanisms have been reported, including thrombosis (most often in the setting of giant cell arteritis), hemodynamic disorders (secondary to severe carotid stenosis) or vasospasm. Transient monocular blindness is considered a transient ischemic attack originating in the carotid arteries and must benefit fr...
