Analysis of retinal microvasculature in Fuchs' uveitis syndrome. Retinal microvasculature in Fuchs' uveitis.
The objective of this study is to quantitatively analyse the foveal microvasculature in eyes with Fuchs' Uveitic Syndrome (FUS), or Fuchs' Heterochromic Iridocyclitis (FHI), by Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: Thirty patients with FUS and 30 healthy volunteer patients (control group) were enrolled in the study. Vascular density (VD) in the superior and deep capillary plexuses (SCP, DCP) were reported and compared between eyes with FUS (FU), fellow eyes (FE) and the control group. RESULTS: Foveal VD and parafoveal VDs in all quadrants of the SCP were significantly lower in the FU group than ...

Dry eye symptoms and signs in children wearing OK lenses for six months in China.
This study aims to investigate symptoms of dry eye and signs of ocular surface disease in children with myopia during OK lens wear. METHODS: A total of 68 subjects were prospectively managed with OK lens correction. These subjects were 8-14 years of age with myopia -0.50 to -5.00 dioptres of sphere and astigmatism of≤1.00 dioptres of cylinder. Patients with any ocular disease were ruled out from this study. All subjects completed a dry eye symptom questionnaire for OSDI scoring, corneal fluorescein staining, tear film break up time (TBUT) test and Schirmer's test I during the follow-up period. The follow-up period i...

[Virtual simulation for learning cataract surgery].
Authors: Adnane I, Chahbi M, Elbelhadji M Abstract INTRODUCTION: The training in phacoemulsification cataract surgery in our context requires a long learning curve for a novice surgeon starting from the observation period to the realization of the different operating stages being supervised by a senior surgeon, all under stressful conditions. Topical or locoregional anesthesia limits the communication in the operating room between the novice surgeon and his mentor; thus, increasing the risk of having more operative complications. To reduce the teaching time of cataract surgery, our department has introduced virtual...

Prospective evaluation of penetrating deep sclerectomy in advanced open-angle glaucoma: Filtration surgery adapted to resource scarcity in developing countries.
Authors: Kalala A, Gillmann K, Mermoud A Abstract PURPOSE: Two of the hurdles that are facing ophthalmologists in developing countries are scarcity of resources and patient follow-up. Deep sclerectomy (DS) has proven less costly and more effective than topical therapies and has a more favorable safety profile than trabeculectomy. The main factors preventing its use in developing countries are the need to perform laser goniopuncture in 40-80% of cases to maintain filtration and the risk of postoperative iris incarceration. The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety profile in advanced open-angle ...

Toxoplasmosis and behavioural changes.
Authors: Desmettre T Abstract Nearly one-third of the planet's population is affected by Toxoplasma gondii infection. In ophthalmology, toxoplasmosis is even considered to be the most common cause of posterior uveitis of infectious origin. Humans are only an intermediate host and T. gondii needs to infect cats for its sexual reproduction. All the elements increasing the risk of predation by the definitive host are then favourable to the parasite. Numerous experimental animal model studies have shown that T. gondii infection is associated with predatory risk behaviours such as an attraction of infected mic...

Influence of cardiac hemodynamic variables on retinal vessel density measurement on optical coherence tomography angiography in patients with myocardial infarction.
CONCLUSION: We found no significant association between retinal vascular density on OCT-A and hemodynamic variables in the acute phase of a myocardial infarction or after 3 months of cardiac rehabilitation. Therefore, OCT-A findings do not seem to be influenced by the hemodynamic changes associated with myocardial infarction. Acute ischemic optic nerve disease: Pathophysiology, clinical features and management.
Authors: Augstburger E, Héron E, Abanou A, Habas C, Baudouin C, Labbé A Abstract Ischemic optic neuropathies are among the leading causes of severe visual acuity loss in people over 50 years of age. They constitute a set of various entities that are clinically, etiologically and therapeutically different. Anatomically, it is necessary to distinguish anterior and posterior forms. From an etiological point of view, the diagnosis of the arteritic form due to giant cell arteritis requires emergent management to prevent blindness and even death in the absence of prompt corticosteroid treatment. When this d...

In vivo Meibomian gland imaging techniques: A review of the literature.
Authors: Robin M, Liang H, Baudouin C, Labbé A Abstract Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) includes a group of complex disorders of the ocular surface. It represents one of the main etiologies of dry eye as well as one of the main reasons for patient visits to the ophthalmologist. Classic clinical tests (dry eye symptoms, tear film break-up time, evaluation of gland expressibility or Schirmer's testing) only provide an indirect assessment of the function of the Meibomian glands and the meibum. Various in vivo testing methods have therefore been developed to image the Meibomian glands, such as Meibography, opt...

Authors: Gauthier AS, Noureddine S, Delbosc B Abstract Interstitial keratitis is a non-ulcerative, non-suppurative, more or less vascularized inflammation of the corneal stroma. The corneal lesions result from the host response to bacterial, viral (40% of cases) or parasitic antigens, or from an autoimmune response (1% of cases) without active corneal infection. The natural history of the disease is divided into two phases : acute and cicatricial. This type of keratitis is less common than ulcerative bacterial keratitis, but it is a non-negligible cause of visual loss. It is associated with systemic or infecti...
