[Contribution of multimodal imaging in the various stages of Stargardt disease].
CONCLUSIONS: Multimodal imaging is helpful for the diagnosis of early stages of STGD disease and to better understand its pathophysiology. FAF and mostly SD-OCT have supplanted FA in the early, especially subclinical, stages. Over all, ICGA shows more extensive damage, making this tool useful for better understanding STGD and suggesting possible direct damage to the choriocapillaris associated with RPE lesions. In advanced stages, only DNA testing can confirm the diagnosis of STGD. PMID: 28919188 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Journal Francais d Ophtalmologie)

[Scleritis and episcleritis].
Authors: Héron E, Bourcier T Abstract Episcleritis is generally a benign disease with a self-limited course, while scleritis is a severe ocular condition due to a risk of impaired vision in one-fifth of patients and its association with systemic diseases in one third of them. Infectious scleritis, representing 8 % of the etiologies, is mainly of herpetic origin (varicella zoster and herpes simplex viruses). A systemic autoimmune disease is observed in roughly 30 % of scleritis patients: inflammatory rheumatisms (15 %), firstly rheumatoid polyarthritis, systemic vasculitides (8 %), mainly ...

[Retinal vein occlusions].
Authors: Pierru A, Girmens JF, Héron E, Paques M Abstract Retinal venous occlusions comprise central retinal vein occlusion, hemiretinal vein occlusions, and branch retinal vein occlusions. They are associated with arterial hypertension and glaucoma. Retinal vein occlusions occur more frequently in males, at a median age of 55. The pathogenesis of retinal venous occlusions remains obscure. The clinical presentation of the disease is variable. In most cases, there is a unilateral visual loss over days with a painless, white and quiet eye. However, retinal venous occlusions may also present as an abrupt and pr...

Fundus autofluorescence in retinal artery occlusion: A more precise diagnosis.
CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE: Fundus autofluorescence may help to detect and characterize retinal emboli. Since lipofuscin, which is present in large quantity in atherosclerotic plaques, is the main fluorophore detected with fundus autofluorescence, this non-invasive and simple examination may give information about the underlying mechanism of retinal embolism, and thus impact the etiologic assessment of RAO. Additional studies are necessary to confirm this potential role of autofluorescence. PMID: 28882392 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Journal Francais d Ophtalmologie)

[Neuro-ophthalmological conditions: Study of the clinical care pathway].
CONCLUSIONS: The review of the clinical care pathway of patients affected by neuro-ophthalmological conditions shows that these pathologies are, on the one hand, often poorly understood, and on the other hand complex, leading to an often significant number of steps for the patient. This also emphasizes the necessity of a care network, specialized and structured to improve the efficiency of this management. Finally, these results demonstrate the existence of a very frequent disability, which may affect all aspects of the patients' lives, highlighting the importance of rehabilitation services and individuals participating in...

Practically, the ophthalmologist manages functional symptoms, such as recurrent erosions, visual loss and amblyopia, photophobia, foreign body sensation, and sometimes pain and aesthetic concerns. Medical treatments consist of drops to promote healing, ointments, hyperosmotic agents and bandage contact lenses....
