Familial primary calcific band-shaped keratopathy with late onset systemic disease: a case series and review of the literature
ConclusionConsidering the late onset of systemic disease in one of the siblings diagnosed with familial calcific band-shaped keratopathy (BSK), it is crucial to emphasize the necessity of long-term follow-up for these patients and their families. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Amniotic membrane transplantation for neurotrophic corneal ulcers
CONCLUSION: Cryopreserved amniotic membrane transplantation can be considered a good alternative for treating refractory neurotrophic corneal ulcers, as it resulted in significant improvement in pain (66%) and complete epithelial closure (60%) in many patients at 1 month postoperatively. Notably, the high failure rate highlights the need for further studies to identify patientand ulcer-related factors that may influence the outcomes of this procedure.PMID:38451687 | DOI:10.5935/0004-2749.2023-2022-0341 (Source: Herpes)

Herpetic Keratouveitis: Missed Diagnosis Leading to Corneal Perforation
We report a case of a 70-year-old female who presented with redness and painless blurry vision in her right eye and was treated with topical corticosteroid drops for presumed idiopathic anterior uveitis. Despite initial symptomatic improvement, she reattended with a significant deterioration in vision and was found to have a large corneal infiltrate and associated perforation. The perforation was sealed with corneal gluing, and she was treated for presumed herpetic anterior uveitis with oral acyclovir. Corneal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) specimen was positive for herpes simplex virus DNA. The perforation started to lea...

Use of discarded corneo-scleral rims to create cornea-like tissue
CONCLUSIONS: The approach effectively helps to shorten the gap between demand and supply of CLMs/CLTs for transplantation. We are exploring the surgical transplantation of this CLT into animal eyes, as keratoprostheses, as a precursor to future applications involving human eyes. It is possible to use either the CLM or CLT, for patients with varying corneal blinding diseases.PMID:38446253 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09321-y (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

UV light-mediated corneal crosslinking as (lymph)angioregressive pretreatment to promote graft survival after subsequent high-risk corneal transplantation (CrossCornealVision): protocol for a multicenter, randomized controlled trial
Good vision highly depends on the transparency of the cornea, which is the “windscreen” of the eye. In fact, corneal blindness due to transparency loss is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide, a... (Source: Trials)

< em > Abiotrophia defectiva < /em > Endophthalmitis Post-Keratoplasty - A Case Report and Literature Review
CONCLUSION: We emphasize aggressive treatment of external disease prior to intraocular surgery. In cases of A. defectiva endophthalmitis, we advocate judicious use of steroids.PMID:38436925 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2324142 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)

3D bioprinted photo crosslinkable GelMA/methylcellulose hydrogel mimicking native corneal model with enhanced in vitro cytocompatibility and sustained keratocyte phenotype for stromal regeneration
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Feb 28:130472. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.130472. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCorneal transplantation serves as the standard clinical therapy for serious corneal disorders. However, rejection of grafts, significant expenditures, and most crucially, the global donor shortage, may affect the outcome. Recently, 3D bioprinting using biodegradable polymeric materials has become a suitable method for creating tissue replicas with identical architecture. One such most renowned material is GelMA, for its scaffold's three-dimensional structure, biocompatibility, robust mechanics, and favourable optical...

Clinical outcomes of traumatic globe rupture in corneal graft patients
ConclusionsThis study represents the first published series from England for this type of patient cohort. Overall visual outcomes were poor with a bimodal relationship of age and mechanism of trauma. Worse prognostic factors included lens and posterior segment complications. Re-grafting in these select group of patients may prove valuable. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Cytomegalovirus Corneal Endotheliitis: A Comprehensive Review
Ocul Immunol Inflamm. 2024 Feb 28:1-10. doi: 10.1080/09273948.2024.2320704. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCytomegalovirus (CMV) anterior uveitis and corneal endotheliitis are the most common ocular diseases caused by CMV infections in immunocompetent patients. The incidence of CMV corneal endotheliitis is relatively high in middle-aged men. CMV corneal endotheliitis presents with mild anterior chamber inflammation, corneal edema, keratic precipitates, and elevated intraocular pressure. It resembles Posner-Schlossman syndrome and Fuchs uveitis because of the elevated intraocular pressure. Without proper diagnosis and treatm...

Relationship of posterior peripheral corneal layers and the trabecular meshwork: an immunohistological and anatomical study
CONCLUSION: The TZ between DM, PDL and TM shows a unique histological structure at the periphery. The collagen and elastin fibres of the TM are continuous with the PDL. The structures are firmly attached to each other. These findings provide structural information that is relevant to the preparation of DMEK donor tissue.PMID:38418206 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-324844 (Source: The British Journal of Ophthalmology)
