Comparative Proteomics Reveals Prolonged Corneal Preservation Impaired Ocular Surface Immunity Accompanied by Fibrosis in Human Stroma
This study is the first to provide insights into how storage duration affects corneal stroma from a proteomic perspective. Our findings may contribute to future research efforts aimed at developing long-term preservation techniques and improving the quality of preserved corneas, thus maximizing their clinical application.PMID:37976471 | DOI:10.1021/acs.jproteome.3c00383 (Source: Cell Research)

Glaucoma after penetrating keratoplasty and keratoprosthesis
CONCLUSIONS: A preoperative diagnosis of glaucoma does not preclude KPro implantation. In glaucomatous eyes, the disease progressed similarly in both groups. Since both procedures increase the risk of worsening glaucoma, close follow-up is recommended. KPro may decrease the need for further corneal transplantation surgery.PMID:37973521 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfo.2023.07.023 (Source: Journal Francais d Ophtalmologie)

Artificial intelligence for detecting keratoconus
CONCLUSIONS: AI appears to be a promising triage tool in ophthalmologic practice for diagnosing keratoconus. Test accuracy was very high for manifest keratoconus and slightly lower for subclinical keratoconus, indicating a higher chance of missing a diagnosis in people without clinical signs. This could lead to progression of keratoconus or an erroneous indication for refractive surgery, which would worsen the disease. We are unable to draw clear and reliable conclusions due to the high risk of bias, the unexplained heterogeneity of the results, and high applicability concerns, all of which reduced our confidence in the ev...

Ultrathin DSAEK versus DMEK - Review of systematic reviews
Eur J Ophthalmol. 2023 Nov 15:11206721231214605. doi: 10.1177/11206721231214605. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe efficacy and safety of Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and ultrathin Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (UT-DSAEK) have been recently compared in several systematic reviews (SRs). The aim of this study was to assess the evidence quality of such SRs, in order to obtain a scientifically rigorous comparison between the two techniques. We performed a systematic review of SRs and meta-analyses comparing the efficacy and safety between UT-DSAEK and DMEK up to 24th March 2023, u...

Human mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue showed a more robust effect than those from the umbilical cord in promoting corneal graft survival by suppressing lymphangiogenesis
CONCLUSIONS: The remarkable inhibitory effects on angiogenesis/lymphangiogenesis and immunological transplantation effects support the development of hAD-MSCs as a cell therapy against corneal transplant rejection. Topical administration of hMSCs was a safer and more effective route for application than systemic administration.PMID:37957770 | DOI:10.1186/s13287-023-03559-2 (Source: Cell Research)

Depth-dependent mechanical properties of the human cornea by uniaxial extension
This study contributes to a better understanding of the biomechanical tensile properties of the cornea, which has important implications for the development of new treatment strategies for corneal diseases. Accurate quantification of tensile strength as a function of depth is critical information that is lacking in human corneal biomechanics to develop numerical models and new treatment methods.PMID:37952725 | DOI:10.1016/j.exer.2023.109718 (Source: Experimental Eye Research)

GSE244412 Characterization of the Limbal Epithelial Stem Cell Niche
Contributors : Isabel Y Moreno ; Arian Parsaie ; Tarsis F Gesterira ; Vivien J Caoulson-ThomasSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Mus musculusLimbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs) reside within the LSC niche (LSCN), located at the annular transition zone between the cornea and conjunctiva. LESCs are important for the long-term maintenance of the corneal epithelium and critical for repopulating the corneal epithelium after injury. We have recently identified that a hyaluronan (HA)-rich extracellular matrix (ECM) exists within the LSCN, and that this HA matrix is necessary for maintaini...

New dawn for keratoconus treatment: potential strategies for corneal stromal regeneration
Stem Cell Res Ther. 2023 Nov 6;14(1):317. doi: 10.1186/s13287-023-03548-5.ABSTRACTKeratoconus is a progressive, ectatic and blinding disorder of the cornea, characterized by thinning of corneal stroma. As a highly prevalent among adolescents, keratoconus has been a leading indication for corneal transplantation worldwide. However, the severe shortage of donor corneas is a global issue, and the traditional corneal transplantation surgeries may superinduce multiple complications, necessitating efforts to develop more effective strategies for keratoconus treatment. In this review, we summarized several strategies to promote c...
