Ocular Symptoms in Kidney, Liver, and Heart Transplant Patients
CONCLUSIONS: Ocular findings were seen in most of the kidney and liver transplant recipients. Therefore, it is required that these patients undergo routine ocular screenings in order to facilitate early diagnosis and prompt treatment when needed.PMID:38385387 | DOI:10.6002/ect.MESOT2023.O34 (Source: Experimental and Clinical Transplantation : official journal of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation)

Collagen type XII is undetectable in keratoconus Bowmans layer
Conclusions The apparent absence of COL12A1 in KC BL, together with the functional importance that COL12A1 is thought to have in stress bearing areas, suggests that COL12A1 may play a role in the pathogenesis of KC. Further studies are necessary to investigate the mechanisms that lead to COL12A1 dysregulation in KC. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Long noncoding RNA ZFAS1: A novel anti-apoptotic target in Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy
This study would broaden our understanding of epigenetic regulation in FECD development, and provide potential anti-apoptotic targets for FECD therapy.PMID:38369232 | DOI:10.1016/j.exer.2024.109832 (Source: Cell Research)

One-year Outcomes of Ultrathin Descemet's Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty Combined with Cataract Surgery in the Korean population
CONCLUSION: The results of our Korean cohort study on UT-DSAEK triple surgery showed favorable and safe outcomes. Regardless of graft thickness, it should be noted that a hyperopic shift of 1.00 to 2.00 D needs to be considered in the case of UT-DSAEK triple surgery.PMID:38351485 | DOI:10.3341/kjo.2023.0101 (Source: Korean Journal of Ophthalmology : KJO)

Real-World Experience in the Use of Immunosuppression for the Management of Inflammatory Eye Disease
CONCLUSION: Progressive conditions, such as cicatrising conjunctivitis may require lifelong immunosuppression, but patients with NIU and Scleritis and those on CTSS, immunosuppression withdrawal should be considered if they remain in remission for 2 years. Any patient stopping a medication should be contacted immediately for counselling. These data will better inform patients, encourage adherence and aide formal guideline development.PMID:38349962 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2311743 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)

Long-term ocular surface stability in conjunctivolimbal autograft and ocular surface safety in the donor eyes
ConclusionsCLAU tissues provide ocular surface stability with a successful vision result in the long term. CLAU theoretically carries risks including limbal stem cell deficiency in the donor eye. In the long-term follow-up of donor eyes after CLAU, ectasia and limbal stem cell deficiency were observed in one eye. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Zone 1 trauma: wound dehiscence compared to primary trauma
ConclusionZone 1 open globe injuries due to wound dehiscence may exhibit worse prognosis compared to primary trauma open globe injury. More important than the zone of injury may be the source. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Allogeneic limbo-deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (Limbo-DALK) —A novel surgical technique in corneal stromal disease and limbal stem cell deficiency
ConclusionBased on the data from this pilot series, limbo-DALK appears to be a viable surgical approach for eyes with severe LSCD and corneal stromal pathology, suitable for emergency situations (e.g. corneal ulceration with impending corneal perforation), while minimising the risk of corneal endothelial decompensation.
