Intracameral Fibrinous Reaction During Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty
CONCLUSION: Fibrinous reaction is a rare intraoperative complication of DMEK that interferes with graft unfolding and results in poor outcomes. Anticoagulant use appears to be a risk factor and may be compounded by surgical trauma to vascular tissues and prolonged surgical maneuvers.PMID:38109198 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2023.2287057 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)

More support for deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty over penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus, but questions remain
In this study, Borderie et al demonstrate long-term advantages of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) compared to penetrating keratoplasty (PK) in the treatment of keratoconus. In particular, they noted differences in long-term endothelial cell count and tendency to develop ocular hypertension favoring the DALK group. This is one of the largest studies on this topic; it provides long-term insight due to its extended follow-up period, and it reinforces the findings published in a previous report from the same group.1 While the current body of evidence suggests that DALK may be comparable in some ways, and superior in...

Long-term outcomes of deep anterior lamellar versus penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus
Conclusions DALK featuring higher endothelial survival and lower risk of postoperative ocular hypertension may be superior to PK when indicated for keratoconus. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Vaccine-associated corneal graft rejection following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination: a CDC-VAERS database analysis
Conclusions This study outlines a possible temporal relationship between corneal graft rejection and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. An earlier onset of VAR was observed in patients who had a history of endothelial keratoplasty and following the second dose of vaccination. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Preloaded DMEK with endo-in technique: Standardizing and minimizing the learning curve over 5 years using 599 corneal tissues
CONCLUSION: DMEK graft preparation requires a learning curve. However, an operator with DMEK stripping skills can easily adapt to pre-loading a DMEK graft in endothelium-inwards fashion with minimal learning curve.PMID:38099841 | DOI:10.1177/11206721231217127 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)

Evaluation of Microvascular Complications in Kidney Recipients with Post-Transplant Diabetes Mellitus
CONCLUSIONS: CAN and DR can affect patients with PTDM at a high rate. DR was found to be a threat to the vision of PTDM patients. Diabetic PN can be detected early in PTDM patients by CCM.PMID:38101939 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad738 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

COVID-19 vaccination and corneal allograft rejection- a review
ConclusionCorneal allograft rejection appears to be a rare complication of COVID-19 vaccination most frequently observed in high-risk corneal transplants. The true extent of this correlation remains controversial; however, clinician awareness of this risk is essential to its mitigation. Patient counselling around symptom monitoring following vaccination and discussion around topical steroid prophylaxis may be prudent. (Source: Frontiers in cellular and infection microbiology)

New characterization and safety evaluation of human limbal stem cells used in clinical application: fidelity of mitotic process and mitotic spindle morphologies
CONCLUSION: This manuscript provides, for the first time, detailed characterization of the parameters of fidelity of the mitotic process and mitotic spindle morphologies of LSCs used in a direct clinical application. Our data show that p63-positive CK3-negative LSCs grown in vitro for clinical purposes undergo mitotic processes with extremely high fidelity, suggesting high karyotype stability. This finding confirms LSCs as a high-quality and safe therapy for eye regeneration in humans.PMID:38093301 | DOI:10.1186/s13287-023-03586-z (Source: Cell Research)

Development of a Corneal and Eye Protection Strategy in Domestic Swine
This study presents an effective method to provide corneal and eye protection in the domestic swine for at least 50 d. Furthermore, protection of the eye and face is achieved through the innovative use of a modified ophthalmologic face shield. The findings from this study will advance large animal research in these fields, enabling innovation in surgery and tissue engineering in areas of both craniofacial and ophthalmologic research.PMID:38087405 (Source: Comparative Medicine)
