Bilateral Corneal and Conjunctival Melanosis
A 70-year-old white female with bilateral cataracts causing severe visual impairment (OD: hand movement, OS: 20/200) was referred to the university clinic. The patient reported increased eye pigmentation for the past 20 years. Endocrinological assessment ruled out systemic diseases. Ocular examination revealed pigmented lesions in both eyes extending from the cornea to the conjunctiva. Cataract surgery was performed along with penetrating keratoplasty. The patient recovered well, achieving a BCVA of 20/200 in her right eye one-week post-surgery. (Source: American Journal of Ophthalmology)

A Detailed Analysis of Individuals Having Graft Failure After Corneal Transplantation
CONCLUSIONS: Most DSEK failures occurred in 1st year, while graft failure in PKs is scattered over years. Failure in DSEK is mostly due to graft or surgical risk factors but in PK mostly due to factors in the host. DSEK does not appear to be as affected by the patients' demographic and clinical characteristics as much as PK.PMID:38753532 | DOI:10.1080/08820538.2024.2354693 (Source: Seminars in Ophthalmology)

To Access Knowledge Regarding Organ Donation among Healthcare Workers and Their Willingness toward Organ Donation
CONCLUSION: We have observed fair awareness regarding overall cadaver organ donation concept among healthcare workers. There is a need to improve knowledge of extended age criteria and which organs can be retrieved from deceased donor. Authorities have to work hard on delivery of organ donation pledging card to promote donation program.PMID:38736075 | DOI:10.59556/japi.71.0418 (Source: Journal of the Association of Physicians of India)

The hiPSC-derived corneal endothelial progenitor-like cell recovers the rabbit model of corneal endothelial dystrophy
CONCLUSION: Here, we demonstrated that customized iHCEPLC has long-term therapeutic efficacy. As a progenitor cell, our iHCEPLC has a restricted cell lineage nature and can proliferate in vitro, supporting sufficient therapeutic candidate cells. Due to the immune-privileged nature of the cornea, our iHCEPLC proves the principle of therapeutical feasibility in both autogenic and allogeneic modalities.PMID:38729560 | DOI:10.1016/j.jare.2024.05.008 (Source: Cell Research)

Enhanced Surgical Safety through Protective Penetrating Keratoplasty: A Retrospective Analysis of 22 Cases
CONCLUSIONS: PPK could potentially mitigate perioperative complications, ensure graft clarity, and reduce corneal endothelial cell loss, presenting itself as a viable alternative to traditional PK. Although the results are encouraging, larger-scale studies are essential to validate the benefits and applicability of PPK in broader clinical settings.PMID:38716088 | PMC:PMC11074865 | DOI:10.1155/2024/2718527 (Source: Journal of Ophthalmology)
