Anti-Angiogenic and Anti-Scarring Dual Effect of Galectin-3 Inhibition in Mouse Animal Models of Corneal Wound Healing
In this study, using mouse models of corneal wound healing, we demonstrate that topical application of a small molecule inhibitor of galectin-3, GB1265: reduces (i) corneal angiogenesis, (ii) corneal fibrosis, (iii) infiltration of immune cells and (iv) expression of proinflammatory cytokine, IL-1β, in injured corneas. Four independent techniques (RNA-seq, NanoString, RT-qPCR, and Western blot analyses) all demonstrated that decrease in corneal opacity in the galectin-3 inhibitor-treated corneas is associated with a decrease in a number of genes and signaling pathways that are known to promote fibrosis. These findings all...

Long-Term Effects of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells for the Treatment of Bilateral Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency
CONCLUSION: ASCs are a feasible and conservative therapy for treating bilateral LSCD. The therapeutic effect differs between etiologies and diminishes over time.PMID:38152876 | DOI:10.1080/02713683.2023.2297342 (Source: Cell Research)

Characterization of cornea donors at a tissue center in the city of Medellin, Colombia
AbstractThe cornea transplant is considered the most frequently performed type of transplant in the world, with a demand that has been increasing in recent years. An observational descriptive study was conducted, focusing on the ocular tissue extracted from cadaveric donors from January 2019 to December 2021 at the Red Cross Eye Bank in Medellin, Colombia. This is the first epidemiological characterization of corneal donor tissues within the eye banks of our city, where high rates of violence-related deaths explain that tissue donors are mostly young individuals. This, in turn, results in excellent counts of endothelial ce...
