Quantifying Coloring Skills Among Preschoolers
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The new method provides objective, reliable, and valid scores representing coloring skills in typically developing children. In addition, the coloring patterns can be recognized. This method can be used to facilitate comparisons of children's coloring skills with peers and provide valuable insight into children's development. Plain-Language Summary: This study proposes a new method to objectively quantify children's coloring skills with sound reliability and validity in typically developing children. The method can be used to evaluate children's coloring skills and patterns to shed light on their...

Anything that can go wrong: cytotoxic cells and their control of Epstein-Barr virus
Rev Alerg Mex. 2024 Feb 1;71(1):29-39. doi: 10.29262/ram.v71i1.1276.ABSTRACTEpstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an gamma of herpes virus affecting exclusively humans, was the first oncogenic virus described and is associated with over seven different cancers. Curiously, the exchange of genes during viral infections has enabled the evolution of other cellular organisms, favoring new functions and the survival of the host. EBV has been co-evolving with mammals for hundreds of millions of years, and more than 95% of adults have been infected in one moment of their life. The infection is acquired primarily during childhood, in most ca...

Delayed Puberty and Management of Treatment
J Clin Res Pediatr Endocrinol. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.4274/jcrpe.galenos.2024.2024-2-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDelayed puberty is defined as the lack of development of secondary sex characteristics in childhood. Based on a review of the literature, delayed puberty can be divided into three main categories: (i) hypergonadotropic hypogonadism (congenital and acquired), (ii) permanent hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (congenital and acquired), and (iii) transient hypogonadotropic hypogonadism [constitutional delay of growth and puberty (CDGP) and functional hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (FHH)]. CDGP is the most common cause...

Neural correlates of lexical-tone and vowel-quality processing in 6- and 9-month-old German-learning infants and adults
We examined the neurophysiological underpinnings of lexical-tone and vowel-quality perception in learners of a non-tonal language. We tested 25 6- and 25 9-month-old German-learning infants, as well as 24 German adults and expected developmental differences for the two linguistic properties, as they are both carried by vowels, but have a different status in German. In adults, both lexical-tone and vowel-quality contrasts elicited mismatch negativities, with a stronger response to the vowel-quality contrast. Six-month-olds showed positive mismatch responses for lexical-tone and vowel-quality contrasts, with an emerging nega...

Alteration in the Expression of Circular Rnas and its association with the Development and Progression of Osteosarcoma, an Integrative Review with High Sensitivity Research
Asian Pac J Cancer Prev. 2024 Apr 1;25(4):1195-1203. doi: 10.31557/APJCP.2024.25.4.1195.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant bone tumor, mainly affecting children, young adults, and the elderly. It is an aggressive cancer with a poor prognosis, exhibiting low survival rates even with standard treatment. Recently, circular RNA molecules capable of influencing gene expression through various functions, with their main role being acting as microRNA sponges and reducing their intracellular expression, have been identified. Recent studies have linked circular RNAs to osteosarcoma development and...

Comparison of CIMT and FMD in the Brachial Artery between Children with Acyanotic Congenital Heart Disease and Healthy Controls: A Case-Control Study
CONCLUSION: Based on our results, CIMT and FMD assessment may help detect early changes in peripheral vessels associated with atherosclerosis in the future in ACHD. Further studies are needed to confirm our findings.PMID:38680641 | PMC:PMC11053238 | DOI:10.18502/jthc.v18i4.14824 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

A prospective randomized comparative trial of pediatric C-MAC D-blade video laryngoscope with McCoy direct laryngoscope for intubation in children posted for elective surgical procedures under general anesthesia
CONCLUSION: The C-MAC video laryngoscope size 2 D-blade provided faster and better glottic visualization but similar intubation difficulty compared to McCoy size 2 laryngoscope in children. The shorter time to achieve glottic view demonstrated with the C-MAC failed to translate into a shorter total duration of intubation when compared to the McCoy laryngoscope attributable to a pronounced curvature of the D-blade.PMID:38682461 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14911 (Source: Paediatric Anaesthesia)

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis: Paternal Anxiety and the Emotional and Behavioral Outcomes in Their Offspring
Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent worldwide; however, the literature lacks a meta-analytic quantification of the risk posed by fathers ’ anxiety for offspring development. Here, we aimed to provide a comprehensive estimate of the magnitude of the association between paternal anxiety and offspring emotional and behavioral problems. The development of brain pericytes requires expression of the transcription factor < i > nkx3 < /i > . < i > 1 < /i > in intermediate precursors
by Suchit Ahuja, Cynthia Adjekukor, Qing Li, Katrinka M. Kocha, Nicole Rosin, Elodie Labit, Sarthak Sinha, Ankita Narang, Quan Long, Jeff Biernaskie, Peng Huang, Sarah J. Childs Brain pericytes are one of the critical cell types that regulate endothelial barrier function and activity, thus ensuring adequate blood flow to the brain. The genetic pathways guiding undifferentiated cells into mature pericytes are not well understood. We show here that pericyte precursor populations from both neural crest and head mesoderm of zebrafish express the transcription factornkx3.1 develop into brain pericytes. We identify the gene sig...

Association between arachidonate lipoxygenase 15,c.-292  C  & gt;  T gene polymorphism and non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis in children: a pilot study on the effects on airway lipoxin A4 and disease phenotype
ConclusionsLow airway LXA4 in children with NCFB is associated with severe disease phenotype and lung function deterioration.CTgenotype ofALOX-15,c.-292 C> Tpolymorphism might be a protective genetic factor against bronchiectasis development and/or progression due to enhanced LXA4 production. The cross-sectional association of parental psychosocial status with children ’s Body Mass Index z-score and the mediating role of children’s energy balance behaviors - the ABCD Study
ConclusionsThis research is unique in including four energy balance behaviors and including both mothers and fathers ’ psychosocial status. Children withfathers experiencing poorer psychosocial status engaged in more screen time which partly explained their higher BMI z-score. (Source: PLoS One)

Development of a patient decision aid for children and adolescents following anterior cruciate ligament rupture: an international mixed-methods study
Conclusion Our patient decision aid is an acceptable tool to help children and adolescents choose an appropriate management option following ACL rupture with their parents and health professionals. A clinical trial evaluating the potential benefit of this tool for children and adolescents considering ACL reconstruction is warranted. (Source: BMJ Open)

The Pediatric Autism Research Cohort (PARC) Study: protocol for a patient-oriented prospective study examining trajectories of functioning in children with autism
Introduction The developmentally variable nature of autism poses challenges in providing timely services tailored to a child’s needs. Despite a recent focus on longitudinal research, priority-setting initiatives with stakeholders highlighted the importance of studying a child’s day-to-day functioning and social determinants of health to inform clinical care. To address this, we are conducting a pragmatic multi-site, patient-oriented longitudinal investigation: the Pediatric Autism Research Cohort (PARC) Study. In young children (<7 years of age) newly diagnosed with autism, we will: (1) examine variability i...
