Exploring Allied Health Models of Care for Children with Developmental Health Concerns, Delays, and Disabilities in Rural and Remote Areas: A Systematic Scoping Review
CONCLUSIONS: Multiple models of care are currently in operation for children with developmental needs in rural and remote areas and appear to improve the quality of care. Due to complexities within, and limitations of, the evidence base, it is unclear if one model of care is superior to another. This review provides a basis for further research to explore why some models may be more effective than others.PMID:38673418 | DOI:10.3390/ijerph21040507 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

Placebo response in patients with Dravet syndrome: Post-hoc analysis of two clinical trials
This study explored placebo response and its effects on safety, efficacy, and quality of life outcomes in patients with Dravet syndrome.METHODS: We performed exploratory post-hoc analyses of pooled data from placebo-treated patients from the GWPCARE 1B and GWPCARE 2 randomized controlled phase III trials, comparing cannabidiol and matched placebo in 2-18 year old Dravet syndrome patients. All patients had ≥4 convulsive seizures during a baseline period of 4 weeks.RESULTS: 124 Dravet syndrome-treated patients were included in the analysis (2-5 years: n = 35; 6-12 years: n = 52; 13-18 years: n = 37). Convulsive seizures we...

Association between polymorphism at codon 469 of the ICAM-1 gene and Henoch-Sch önlein purpura in an Iranian cohort
Nucleosides Nucleotides Nucleic Acids. 2024 Apr 27:1-8. doi: 10.1080/15257770.2024.2334360. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHenoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is a common form of IgA1-mediated blood vessel inflammation affecting mainly children. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) gene polymorphisms have been shown to be associated with HSP in different populations; in this study, we investigated its potential association and influence on the development of severe complications in Iranian HSP patients. Twenty-three patients diagnosed with IgAV/HSP according to the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) wi...

Using Family Needs Assessments to Guide Place ‐Based Services for Vulnerable Families: Lessons From the COVID‐19 Pandemic
ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic created significant health, social and economic impacts, disproportionately affecting minority, immigrant and low-income communities. Agencies were challenged to rapidly address emerging needs, yet most operated on anecdotal information. This paper describes a community-informed family needs assessment in Miami, Florida, during November 2020 –March 2021. It was conducted by a nonprofit agency collaborating with a university. The aims were to capture socio-economic, educational and health needs experienced during the early pandemic to inform place-based services. Eighty-one participants, most...

Using a Video Activity Schedule to Teach Cooperative Games to Autistic Children in a Camp Setting
In this study, a non-concurrent multiple baseline design across participants was used to evaluate the effect of a video activity schedule to teach four dyads of autistic children how to play cooperative games during a summer day camp. Results indicate that all participants learned how to play the game, including during generalization and maintenance probes. A limitation within the study was a lack of data collected for social communication and social validity. Future research should collect social communication data and/or other measures like indices of happiness (e.g., smiling, laughing, etc.). (Source: Journal of Develop...

Comparison of Caregivers ’ and Children’s Preference for Mand Topography During Functional Communication Training
AbstractFunctional communication training (FCT; Carr& Durand, 1985) is frequently utilized as a treatment for socially maintained problem behavior (Tiger et al., 2008). Although FCT is a viable treatment option for the reduction of problem behavior, researchers have identified several variables related to the selection of the functional communication response (FCR) topography that may influence treatment outcomes, including individual and caregiver preference. However, there may be times in which the target individual and caregiver preference do not match. Given this, there is a need for procedures to identify and comp...

Longitudinal effects of socioeconomic status on first and second language reading development: evidence from Chinese children learning English
AbstractWhile it has been shown that socioeconomic status (SES) is important for children ’s literacy development in their first language (L1), less is known about its association with reading in a second language (L2). The present study examined the different effects of SES on the acquisition of reading in Chinese as L1 and English as L2 from ages 7 to 11, among 291 Chinese children. The results showed that the contribution of SES to Chinese word reading was not significant. In contrast, SES significantly predicted English word reading. Mediation analyses revealed that SES had direct and indirect effects on English word...

The Mediating Effect of Self-Efficacy in the Relationship Between Parental Communication and Digital Addiction
AbstractIn recent years, the excessive use of digital technologies has led to the emergence of digital addiction at earlier ages. However, studies explaining the causes of digital addiction are limited. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the links between maternal communication, paternal communication, and digital addiction, and whether these relationships were mediated by self-efficacy. It was also tested whether these links were moderated by gender. The data were collected from 601 middle school students aged 11 –14 (61.7% girls,Mage  = 12.23 SD = 1.03). The participants completed the Digital A...

Atypical procedural learning in children with developmental coordination disorder: A combined behavioral and neuroimaging study
Brain Cogn. 2024 Apr 25;177:106160. doi: 10.1016/j.bandc.2024.106160. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhile procedural learning (PL) has been implicated in delayed motor skill observed in developmental coordination disorder (DCD), few studies have considered the impact of co-occurring attentional problems. Furthermore, the neurostructural basis of PL in children remains unclear. We investigated PL in children with DCD while controlling for inattention symptoms, and examined the role of fronto-basal ganglia-cerebellar morphology in PL. Fifty-nine children (6-14 years; nDCD = 19, ncontrol = 40) completed the serial reaction ti...
