Tenascin C activates the toll ‑like receptor 4/NF‑κB signaling pathway to promote the development of polycystic ovary syndrome
In conclusion, knockdown of TNC could ameliorate PCOS in both rats and a cell model by inhibiting cell apoptosis, oxidative stress and inflammation via the suppression of the TLR4/NF‑κB signaling pathway.PMID:38666538 | DOI:10.3892/mmr.2024.13230 (Source: Molecular Medicine Reports)

Better than Goodenough? Evaluating new computational techniques for finding diagnostic structure in children's drawings
Mem Cognit. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.3758/s13421-024-01557-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn her 1926 book Measurement of Intelligence by Drawings, Florence Goodenough pioneered the quantitative analysis of children's human-figure drawings as a tool for evaluating their cognitive development. This influential work launched a broad enterprise in cognitive evaluation that continues to the present day, with most clinicians and researchers deploying variants of the checklist-based scoring methods that Goodenough invented. Yet recent work leveraging computational innovations in cognitive science suggests that human-figure drawing...

Measuring empowerment in pregnant women: A scoping review of progress in instruments
CONCLUSION: There were heterogeneous results regarding the included instruments' appraisal content and psychometric properties. Future studies focusing on the development or validation of measurement instruments should be guided by influential and identical standards.PMID:38669756 | DOI:10.1016/j.midw.2024.104002 (Source: Midwifery)

Discovery of a novel homozygous SOD1 truncating variant bolsters infantile SOD1 deficiency syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings contribute an affirmative report of a fourth biallelic variant resulting in a severe clinical phenotype, reminiscent of those induced by previously identified homozygous loss-of-function SOD1 variants. This research not only advances our understanding of the pathogenesis of this debilitating neurological syndrome but also aligns with ongoing intensive efforts to comprehend and address SOD1-linked ALS.PMID:38668754 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09513-6 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Atypical procedural learning in children with developmental coordination disorder: A combined behavioral and neuroimaging study
Brain Cogn. 2024 Apr 25;177:106160. doi: 10.1016/j.bandc.2024.106160. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhile procedural learning (PL) has been implicated in delayed motor skill observed in developmental coordination disorder (DCD), few studies have considered the impact of co-occurring attentional problems. Furthermore, the neurostructural basis of PL in children remains unclear. We investigated PL in children with DCD while controlling for inattention symptoms, and examined the role of fronto-basal ganglia-cerebellar morphology in PL. Fifty-nine children (6-14 years; nDCD = 19, ncontrol = 40) completed the serial reaction ti...

Quality-of-Life Assessment in Pediatric Advanced Cancer: Development of the Patient-Reported Outcome Measure < em > Advance QoL < /em >
Curr Oncol. 2024 Apr 19;31(4):2289-2304. doi: 10.3390/curroncol31040170.ABSTRACTA recent measure was developed to assess the Quality of Life (QoL) of young people with advanced cancer and is available for parents and professionals (Advance QoL). The present study aimed to elaborate self-reported versions for children and adolescents with advanced cancer. We adopted a four-phase research plan: (1) to elaborate the Advance QoL questionnaire for youth (8-12 and 13-18 years old) with a team of young research partners; (2) to evaluate the understandability of these versions in a sample of 12 young patients from the target popul...

Protective factors against depression in high-risk children and adolescents: a systematic review of longitudinal studies
Braz J Psychiatry. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.47626/1516-4446-2023-3363. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Depression is a significant global disability, and early adverse experiences (EAE) represent consistent risk factors in children. However, protective factors play a vital role in promoting healthy development and mitigating these risks.METHODS: We conducted a thorough literature search on Pubmed, APA, Emcare, and EMBASE from 1946 to August 25, 2023. We included longitudinal studies analyzing protective factors for depressive symptoms in high-risk children or adolescents, excluding cross-sectional studies, reviews, a...

Poverty proofing healthcare: A qualitative study of barriers to accessing healthcare for low-income families with children in northern England
PLoS One. 2024 Apr 26;19(4):e0292983. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0292983. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTPoverty impacts negatively on children's health and future life chances. Access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS) is based on clinical need rather than the ability to pay but horizontal inequities in access exist. Children North East, a charity supporting children experiencing poverty, are working with partners to reduce the impacts of poverty on NHS access. This collaborative study aimed to understand barriers to healthcare access faced by families living on low incomes to validate and support further development of a...
