Chinese Grammatical Development of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children in a Sign Bilingualism and Coenrollment Program
Am Ann Deaf. 2023;167(5):675-699. doi: 10.1353/aad.2023.0007.ABSTRACTThe literacy development of d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) children has always been a matter of grave concern among educators, and grammatical knowledge is said to constitute a major component such development. The present article reports on a study that examined the development of Chinese grammar among groups of d/Dhh and hearing children who received education through a sign bilingualism and coenrollment (SLCO) approach. Findings from administration of a prestandardized assessment tool showed that while the d/Dhh children generally lagged behind the...

Spoken Language Bilingualism in the Education of Deaf Learners
Am Ann Deaf. 2023;167(5):727-744. doi: 10.1353/aad.2023.0009.ABSTRACTFor much of the history of deaf education, spoken language bilingualism was not considered a viable goal. It was believed that given the challenges of meaningful auditory access, age-appropriate development in even one language would be daunting. However, implementation of universal newborn hearing screening during the early 2000s, along with early fitting of hearing technologies, including cochlear implants, has afforded significantly improved access to spoken language during the critical early years of language acquisition for most deaf children. In thi...

Validation of the PediBIRN-7 clinical prediction rule for pediatric abusive head trauma
CONCLUSION: The PediBIRN-7's overall AHT prediction performance has been validated in a novel, equivalent, patient population. Its patient-specific estimates of AHT probability can inform physicians' AHT-related diagnostic reasoning after abuse evaluation.PMID:38663048 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106799 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Past Is Prologue: Ethical Issues in Pediatric Psychedelics Research and Treatment
Perspect Biol Med. 2023;66(1):129-144. doi: 10.1353/pbm.2023.0007.ABSTRACTRecent clinical trials of psychedelic drugs aim to treat a range of psychiatric conditions in adults. MDMA and psilocybin administered with psychotherapy have received FDA designation as "breakthrough therapies" for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and treatment-resistant depression (TRD) respectively. Given the potential benefit for minors burdened with many of the same disorders, calls to expand experimentation to minors are inevitable. This essay examines psychedelic research conducted on children from 1959 to 1974, highlighting methodologica...

Acoustic Analyses of Tone Productions in Sequencing Contexts Among Cantonese-Speaking Preschool Children With and Without Childhood Apraxia of Speech
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that Cantonese-speaking children with CAS had difficulty in varying F0 within syllables as compared to those without CAS, suggesting pitch variation difficulty and language-specific impairment profiles in CAS. Future investigations of objective measures for identifying Cantonese speakers with CAS and cross-linguistic investigations using growth curve analysis and the TST are suggested.PMID:38662942 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-23-00383 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Creating optimally safe and enjoyable youth sporting experiences within the United Kingdom
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2024 Apr 23:102652. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2024.102652. Similarly, attention has been given to enhancing children's psychosocial experiences within sport. However, to-date, consideration of these two elements together, that is minimising abuse and enhancing enjoyment, has been minimal. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to explore perceptions of the process through which an optimally safe and enjoyable sporting experience can be create...

Radiological features and treatment of erupting maxillary canines in relation to the occurrence of dental developmental abnormalities
CONCLUSIONS: The children with dental developmental abnormalities more often showed evidence of early treatment for the canines. Monitoring of the erupting canines after the first mixed stage is important to enable timely early treatment.PMID:38661111 | DOI:10.2340/aos.v83.40488 (Source: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica)

Preparing to "Live a Life of Possibilities": Experiences of Healthcare Providers Readying Autistic Adolescents and Their Families for Independent Driving
This study describes providers' experiences supporting autistic adolescents and families in the decision to pursue licensure and identifies barriers experienced in providing support. We conducted interviews with 15 healthcare providers focused on how they support autistic adolescents and their families in navigating topics related to independence, driving, and transportation. Key themes identified included: importance of understanding adolescents' perspectives and motivations, approaches to readying caregivers for children to pursue driving, and role of providers in fostering agreement between adolescents and caregivers.
