Feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a theory-informed resistance exercise training single-arm intervention for major depression
CONCLUSIONS: Preliminary results suggest RET for MDD treatment is feasible and plausibly efficacious, finding large antidepressant effects. A sufficiently powered randomized controlled trial to assess RET's efficacy for treating MDD via potential cerebrovascular mechanisms is warranted.PMID:38615899 | DOI:10.1016/j.psychsport.2024.102642 (Source: Psychology of Sport and Exercise)

Perfectionism, Disordered Eating and Well-Being in Aesthetic Sports: The Mediating Role of Passion
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2024 Apr 11:102648. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2024.102648. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAesthetic athletes face higher risks of disordered eating, and perfectionism is one of the determinants involved. While research suggests that perfectionism in sport may play a role in physical and psychological well-being, its influence remains to be confirmed. As such, further examination of the influence of perfectionism on health is warranted as it could lead to better interventions. This preregistered research sought to shed new light on these relationships by investigating the mediating role of passion in the...

The Exercise Intensity-Music-Tempo Preference Relationship: A Decennial Revisit
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2024 Apr 10:102644. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2024.102644. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTempo is a key determinant of the motivational effects of music during exercise and has been the focus of numerous empirical studies (e.g., Karageorghis & Jones, 2014). The present study sought to address the limitations of previous related work and revisit the relationship between exercise intensity and music-tempo preference using unfamiliar, non-lyrical music (to isolate the tempo manipulation). A within-within experimental design was employed to test hypotheses pertaining to the non-linear relationship and ...

Factors Contributing to Elite Athletes' Mental Health in the Junior-to-Senior Transition: A Mixed Methods Study
Psychol Sport Exerc. 2024 Apr 10:102645. doi: 10.1016/j.psychsport.2024.102645. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe goals of this study were to examine factors that may affect the mental health of elite athletes during their junior-to-senior transition and to explore the types and frequency of facilitators and challenges athletes encounter during this transition. Using a cross-sectional, embedded QUAN(qual) mixed methods study design, we surveyed two samples for the study goals. All participants completed demographic data (e.g., gender, age, sports). Sample one (N = 394, Mage = 18.46 years, SD = 2.2) consisted of current tra...

A Grounded Theory of Youth Athlete Concussion Under-Reporting Decisions
CONCLUSIONS: A theoretical grounded model for youth sport-related concussion under-reporting highlights the complexity of the decision-making process. This study offers a new framework for understanding why youth athletes may hide concussion symptoms. The model offers potential to be used to develop concussion interventions and tools for improved decision-making, and to address issues of risk and responsibility concerning concussion reporting.PMID:38604573 | DOI:10.1016/j.psychsport.2024.102646 (Source: Psychology of Sport and Exercise)
