Bayesian network-based survival prediction model for patients having undergone post-transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt for portal hypertension
CONCLUSION: This study successfully developed a BN-based survival prediction model with good predictive capabilities. It offers valuable insights for treatment strategies and prognostic evaluations in patients having undergone TIPS surgery for PHT.PMID:38659484 | PMC:PMC11036496 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1859 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology)

Electrical Stimulation of Acupuncture Points Helps Resolve a Child's Failure to Thrive
CONCLUSIONS: In this particular case, electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation may have facilitated a weight gain in this female child. EA (nonneedle) research should be explored for FTT.PMID:38659723 | PMC:PMC11036154 | DOI:10.1089/acu.2023.0087 (Source: Acupuncture in Medicine)

Child and Family Social Work as a Space for Promoting Social Cohesion
ABSTRACTPromoting social cohesion is frequently mentioned as an objective for child and family social work from a policy perspective. However, it is unclear how policies shape concrete child and family social work practices. The aim of the current study is to analyse how early childhood services in Flanders (Belgium) commit to the promotion social cohesion. An explorative multiple case study in Flanders, using (non)participatory observations (N = 40), was performed in child and family social work practices to answer the following research question: What is going on in child and family social work regarding the promotio...

Danish Diabetes Birth Registry 2: a study protocol of a national prospective cohort study to monitor outcomes of pregnancies of women with pre-existing diabetes
Introduction Despite technological developments and intensified care, pregnancies in women with pre-existing diabetes are still considered high-risk pregnancies. The rate of adverse outcomes in pregnancies affected by diabetes in Denmark is currently unknown, and there is a limited understanding of mechanisms contributing to this elevated risk. To address these gaps, the Danish Diabetes Birth Registry 2 (DDBR2) was established. The aims of this registry are to evaluate maternal and fetal-neonatal outcomes based on 5 years cohort data, and to identify pathophysiology and risk factors associated with short-term and long-term...

Experiences and impact of psychiatric inpatient admissions far away from home: a qualitative study with young people, parents/carers and healthcare professionals
Conclusions At-distance admissions lead to additional distress, uncertainty, compromised continuity of care and educational, financial and other practical difficulties, some of which could be better mitigated. For a minority, there are some benefits from such admissions. Clinical implications Standardised online information, accessible prior to admission, is needed for all Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services units. Additional practical and financial burden placed on families needs greater recognition and consideration of potential sources of support. Policy changes should incorporate findings that at-distance or a...

Nash, Martin Holland Trachoma is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide and is now largely confined to around 40 low- and middle-income countries. It is caused byChlamydia trachomatis (Ct), a contagious intracellular bacterium. The World Health Organization recommends mass drug administration (MDA) with azithromycin for treatment and control of ocular Ct infections, alongside improving facial cleanliness and environmental conditions to redu...

Prevalence of childhood stunting and determinants in low and lower-middle income African countries: Evidence from standard demographic and health survey
ConclusionStunting among children under five years of age in low- and lower-middle-income African countries was relatively high. Individual, community, and country-level factors were statistically associated with childhood stunting. Equally importantly, with child, maternal, and community factors of stunting, the income of countries needs to be considered in providing nutritional interventions to mitigate childhood stunting in Africa. Differences in maternal and paternal pressure to eat and perception of household responsibilities
by Paula Patel, Anusha Samant, Kychelle Del Rosario, Mara Z. Vitolins, Joseph A. Skelton, Edward H. Ip, Caroline B. Lucas, Callie L. Brown Controlling feeding practices, such as pressure to eat, are associated with a child’s disinhibited eating and extremes in bodyweight. We aimed to explore which factors are associated with parent dyads’ pressuring feeding practices, including how mothers and fathers perceive the sharing of hous ehold tasks such as mealtime and child feeding responsibilities. In this cross-sectional study, parent dyads (mother and father) of healthy preschool-aged children completed an identical ques...

Mandibular distraction osteogenesis in children with Pierre Robin Sequence: long-term analysis of teeth and jaw growth
Treatment of children with Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) having a hypoplastic mandible and upper airway distress after birth may consist of external distraction devices. Shape anomalies of the permanent molars and positional changes due to the surgery have been documented. The aim of this study is to compare the long-term effects (>5 years) on the growth pattern of PRS-patients treated with an external mandibular distraction device with no-surgery cases and to investigate the dental development or damage. Data-Informed Communication: How Measurement-Based Care Can Optimize Child Psychotherapy
AbstractMeasurement-based care (MBC) research and practice, including clinical workflows and systems to support MBC, are grounded in adult-serving mental health systems. MBC research evidence is building in child and adolescent services, but MBC practice is inherently more complex due to identified client age, the family system and the need to involve multiple reporters. This paper seeks to address a gap in the literature by providing practical guidance for youth-serving clinicians implementing MBC with children and their families. We focus on MBC as a data-informed, client-centered communication process, and present three...

Understanding Typing Skill in Students With Developmental Disorders
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTyping is an important skill for education and beyond and is often recommended for those with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and/or specific learning disorder (SLD) when handwriting is a challenge. This review outlines a model of typing to demonstrate the language, perceptual, and motor components involved. It then summarises selected research on typing skill in DCD and SLD. The purpose of the review is to identify current knowledge of typing skill in these groups to enhance understanding and inform future work on assessment, accommodations, and intervention.Recent FindingsThirteen relev...
