Perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis in the setting of cochlear implantation: a retrospective analysis of 700 cases
ConclusionPatients receiving an antibiotic single shot do not appear to be at significantly increased risk for postoperative wound infections compared with patients with prolonged antibiotic treatment. Continuation of data collection across centers seems reasonable. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Fournier's gangrene due to rectal cancer: A case report
Mol Clin Oncol. 2024 Feb 12;20(4):30. doi: 10.3892/mco.2024.2728. eCollection 2024 Apr.ABSTRACTFournier's gangrene (FG) is an extremely rare necrotizing fasciitis that is insidious, rapidly spreading and life-threatening. FGs due to rectal cancer occur rarely and there is a lack of clinical reference. In the present study, a severe FG due to rectal cancer perforation was described and the features of this rare disease were summarized with a literature review. A 57-year-old man was admitted because of rectal cancer-induced FG. The patient was misdiagnosed with extensive perianal abscess until the intraoperative biopsy confi...

Human Amniotic MSC Response in LPS-Stimulated Ascites from Patients with Cirrhosis: FOXO1 Gene and Th17 Activation in Enhanced Antibacterial Activation
In this study, we used an in vitro SBP model and employed omics techniques (next-generation sequencing) to investigate the mechanisms by which hA-MSCs modify the crosstalk between immune cells in LPS-stimulated ascitic fluid. We also validated the data obtained via qRT-PCR, cytofluorimetric analysis, and Luminex assay. These findings provide further support to the hope of using hA-MSCs for the prevention and treatment of infective diseases, such as SBP, offering a viable alternative to antibiotic therapy.PMID:38474048 | DOI:10.3390/ijms25052801 (Source: Molecular Medicine)

Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) in Germany: insights and clinical outcomes from the K-APAT cohort study
ConclusionThe study demonstrates that OPAT can be safely conducted in Germany. In preparation for its broader implementation, crucial next steps include creating medical guidelines, fostering interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral communication, as well as creating financial and structural regulations that facilitate and encourage the adoption of OPAT.Trial registration numberNCT04002453. The Orthopaedic Device Infection Network (ODIN): Building an Evidence Base for the Treatment of Periprosthetic Joint Infection through International Collaboration
Periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) are associated with substantial morbidity, affecting between 1 and 2% of patients undergoing a primary joint arthroplasty and approximately 7% of patients undergoing an aseptic joint revision [1]. Management of this condition typically requires prolonged hospital stays, multiple surgical procedures, and long-term antibiotic therapy. Such intensive management is associated with adverse mental health outcomes [2], reductions in overall quality of life [3], and high rates of morbidity [4, 5]. (Source: The Journal of Arthroplasty)

Variables associated with antibiotic treatment tolerance in patients with Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease
CONCLUSIONS: Patients prescribed antibiotic therapy for MAC-PD are more likely to experience ADRs if they have smear positive sputum cultures at diagnosis, a higher CCI, or existing liver disease. Our study's rate of early treatment cessation due to ADR's was similar to that of other studies (20%) but is the first of its kind to evaluate patient and disease factors associated with ADR's. A systematic approach to classifying and addressing ADRs for patients undergoing treatment for MAC-PD is an area for further investigation.PMID:38468274 | DOI:10.1186/s12931-024-02752-y (Source: Respiratory Care)

Stereotactic placement of dual lumen catheter system for continuous drainage, irrigation, and intraventricular antibiotic therapy for treatment of brain abscess with ventriculitis - A case report and literature review
CONCLUSION: The use of the dual lumen system represented a significant advancement in this case, addressing the limitations of conventional treatments. Its ability to maintain intracranial pressure within optimal limits while providing localized, continuous treatment was pivotal. This case highlights the potential of the dual lumen catheter in managing complex neurosurgical infections and underscores the need for further research to establish its efficacy in broader clinical applications.PMID:38468682 | PMC:PMC10927178 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_977_2023 (Source: Surgical Neurology International)

Massive bilateral paraclinoidal subdural empyema and parenchymal temporopolar abscess with anatomical infection pathway in a chronic inhaling cocaine-addicted patient: A case report and literature review
CONCLUSION: The treatment involved an endoscopic endonasal approach, followed by a right frontal-temporal approach to obtain tissue samples for bacterial analysis and surgical debridement of the suppurative process. Targeted antibiotic therapy helped restore the patient's neurological status.PMID:38468675 | PMC:PMC10927190 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_965_2023 (Source: Surgical Neurology International)

Application of a multiplex molecular pneumonia panel and real-world impact on antimicrobial stewardship among patients with hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia in intensive care units
CONCLUSIONS: This study identified several factors predicting bacterial detection by FAPP in critically ill patients with HAP/VAP. More than 50% real-world clinical practices were adjusted or confirmed based on the FAPP results. Clinical algorithms for the use of FAPP and antimicrobial stewardship guidelines may further enhance its benefits.PMID:38471985 | DOI:10.1016/j.jmii.2024.02.010 (Source: Journal of Microbiology, Immunology, and Infection)
