Spondylodiscitis after sacral colpopexy: diagnose early to treat earlier
Int J Clin Exp Pathol. 2024 Mar 15;17(3):90-95. doi: 10.62347/RERC7901. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTSpondylodiscitis following sacral colpopexy for Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) represents a rare complication with severe consequences. Authors performed a literature search, from 2000 to 2022, to set a narrative review of literature. Spondylodiscitis is an uncommon but dangerous side effect of a routine surgical treatment that needs to be identified and treated right away to prevent worsening clinical consequences. Suboptimal dissection of the sacral promontory and/or site infection are associated with spondylodiscitis. When spon...

Unusual cause of abdominal pain
Case presentation An 18-year-old woman presented with a 4-day history of worsening abdominal pain. Physical examination revealed tenderness in the left mid abdomen, without rebound tenderness. Laboratory workups revealed neutrophilia (10 890/µL), elevated C reactive protein (38.59 mg/L) and increased faecal calprotectin (>50 µg/g). Haemoglobin, liver function, renal function and urinalysis results were within normal range. Immunological investigations, including immunoglobulin levels, antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies and antinuclear antibodies, were all normal. An abdominal CT scan demonstrated wall thi...

IL-10 Counteracts IFN- γ to Alleviate Acute Lung Injury in a Viral-Bacterial Superinfection Model
Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol. 2024 Apr 4. doi: 10.1165/rcmb.2023-0437OC. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImmune activation is essential for lung control of viral and bacterial infection, but an overwhelming inflammatory response often leads to the onset of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Interleukin-10 (IL-10) plays a crucial role in regulating the balance between antimicrobial immunity and immunopathology. In the current study, we have investigated the role of IL-10 in acute lung injury (ALI) induced by influenza A virus (IAV) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) coinfection. This unique coinfecti...

Human in vivo evidence of associations between herpes simplex virus and cerebral amyloid-beta load in normal aging
CONCLUSIONS: All together, these results suggest that HSV infection is selectively related to cortical Aβ deposition in normal aging, supporting the inclusion of cognitively normal older adults in prospective trials of antimicrobial therapy aimed at decreasing the AD risk in the aging population.PMID:38570885 | DOI:10.1186/s13195-024-01437-4 (Source: Herpes)
