IL-10 Counteracts IFN- γ to Alleviate Acute Lung Injury in a Viral-Bacterial Superinfection Model
Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol. 2024 Apr 4. doi: 10.1165/rcmb.2023-0437OC. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImmune activation is essential for lung control of viral and bacterial infection, but an overwhelming inflammatory response often leads to the onset of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Interleukin-10 (IL-10) plays a crucial role in regulating the balance between antimicrobial immunity and immunopathology. In the current study, we have investigated the role of IL-10 in acute lung injury (ALI) induced by influenza A virus (IAV) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) coinfection. This unique coinfecti...

Human in vivo evidence of associations between herpes simplex virus and cerebral amyloid-beta load in normal aging
CONCLUSIONS: All together, these results suggest that HSV infection is selectively related to cortical Aβ deposition in normal aging, supporting the inclusion of cognitively normal older adults in prospective trials of antimicrobial therapy aimed at decreasing the AD risk in the aging population.PMID:38570885 | DOI:10.1186/s13195-024-01437-4 (Source: Herpes)

Validation of Drug Resistance in Pneumonia (DRIP) Score as Empirical Antibiotic Failure Predictor in Community-Acquired Pneumonia Patients in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital
CONCLUSION: The DRIP score has low accuracy performance and calibration value in predicting empirical antibiotic failure and poor discriminatory value.PMID:38561875 (Source: Acta medica Indonesiana)

Implementation of a quality improvement strategy to optimise the management of community acquired pneumonia in a rural health setting
Aust J Rural Health. 2024 Apr 1. doi: 10.1111/ajr.13116. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPROBLEM: In Australia, inappropriate prescribing of antimicrobials is higher in rural and regional areas than in major city hospitals. Inappropriate prescribing is defined as the prescription of antimicrobial agents that do not adhere to guidelines in terms of type of antimicrobial chosen, dose and/or duration or are deemed unnecessary. A review of antimicrobial prescribing in a Queensland rural Hospital and Health Service (HHS) identified that respiratory infections were an area for potential improvement.SETTING: The study was performed...

A rare case of necrotizing fasciitis of the leg in an intravenous drug user caused by < em > Prevotella denticola < /em >
CONCLUSIONS: In IDUs the risk of deep skin and soft tissue infections is high and may be aggravated by contamination with oral microorganisms. The choice of empirical antibiotic treatment should include agents active against oral cavity anaerobes, such as P. denticola.PMID:38562513 | PMC:PMC10984238 | DOI:10.1080/20002297.2024.2334545 (Source: Journal of Oral Microbiology)
