A Rare Case of Lemierre ’s Syndrome due to Veillonella Parvula: A Dangerous and Forgotten Complication of a Septic Condition
AbstractThis clinical case presents an unusual case of Lemierre ’s syndrome (LS) in a young woman of 38-year-old. She arrived in the Emergency Department with a high fever and pharyngology resistant to antibiotic therapy with clarithromycin, ceftriaxone, and cortisone for two weeks. At the blood sampling, there is a marked leucocytosis, and the advice of the o tolaryngologist is required given the strong pain in the throat. Due to the tonsillar abscess, a neck CT with a contrast medium is necessary for the otolaryngologist’s opinion. The CT shows thrombosis of the jugular vein and left subclavian, with thickening of so...

Assessment and clinical utility of metagenomic next-generation sequencing for suspected lower respiratory tract infections
ConclusionsmNGS offers rapid and precise pathogen detection for patients with suspected LRTIs and shows considerable promise in diagnosingMycobacterium tuberculosis and fungal infections. By broadening the pathogen spectrum and identifying polymicrobial infections, mNGS can significantly inform and refine antibiotic therapy. (Source: European Journal of Medical Research)

Major complications after intraoperative radiotherapy with low-energy x-rays in early breast cancer
ConclusionIORT is an efficient and safe treatment method as<  2.5% of all IORT patients experienced major local complications. However, it seems to pose the risk of causing severe local complications that may require lengthy and burdensome treatment. Thorough preoperative counseling, implementation of recommended intraoperative precautions, and high vigilan ce for first symptoms of complications during follow-up appointments are necessary measures. Percutaneous aspiration of aortic valve vegetation in a patient with aortic valve endocarditis
We report a case of percutaneous aspiration of an aortic valve vegetation in a patient with prosthetic valve endocarditis. This novel approach was selected after patient declined surgical intervention for an enlarging vegetation despite antibiotic therapy. The procedure was successful, resulting in the complete removal of solid vegetation without complications. (Source: Clinical Case Reports)

Comparison of Cefazolin and Ceftriaxone Enterobacterales Susceptibilities for Inpatient Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections and Risk of Hospital-Onset Clostridioides difficile Infection
Clin Ther. 2024 Mar 28:S0149-2918(24)00066-3. doi: 10.1016/j.clinthera.2024.02.011. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the second most common indication for antibiotic therapy among inpatients in the United States. Ceftriaxone, a third-generation cephalosporin, is habitually chosen to treat inpatient UTIs due to familiarity, cost, and perceived safety. However, third-generation cephalosporins increase the risk of health care facility-onset Clostridioides difficile infection (HOCDI) more than any other antibiotic group, while no statistical risk exists for first-generation cephalosporins...

Tetralogy of Fallot complicated by multiple cerebral abscesses in a child: a case report
ConclusionA comprehensive strategy involving medications, surgical drainage, and early neurosurgical consultation is vital in treating brain abscesses in uncorrected TOF. Early identification of the pathogen, appropriate antibiotic therapy, and vigilant follow-up through clinical assessments and imaging are crucial, potentially spanning a 4 –8-week treatment. Nocardiosis in kidney transplant recipients: A tertiary care center experience

Interrogation of RNA-protein interaction dynamics in bacterial growth
In this study, we have analysed the dynamics of 91% of the Escherichia coli expressed proteome and the RNA-interaction properties of 271 RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) at different growth phases. We find that 68% of RBPs differentially bind RNA across growth phases and characterise 17 previously unannotated proteins as bacterial RBPs including YfiF, a ncRNA-binding protein. While these new RBPs are mostly present in Proteobacteria, two of them are orthologs of human mitochondrial proteins associated with rare metabolic disorders. Moreover, we reveal novel RBP functions for proteins such as the chaperone HtpG, a new stationary...

Outer membrane vesicles as nanovaccine candidates against pathogenic Leptospira in experimental Guinea pig model
Biologicals. 2024 Mar 26;86:101764. doi: 10.1016/j.biologicals.2024.101764. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLeptospira interrogans serovar Hardjo is a long slender bacterium of size 0.1-0.3 μm × 5-50 μm. It is one of the major causes of bovine leptospirosis and is of economical importance because of the reproductive failure, still birth, abortion, and reduced productivity in cattle. It is also a zoonotic disease-causing infection in humans characterized by headaches, fever, chills, sweats and myalgia, lethargy, aching joints, pulmonary haemorrhages, and death in severe cases. Control of the disease involves antibiotic the...
