A high performance liquid chromatography - Tandem mass spectrometry assay for therapeutic drug monitoring of 10 drug compounds commonly used for antimicrobial therapy in plasma and serum of critically ill patients: Method optimization, validation, cross-validation and clinical application
CONCLUSION: The established multiplex method covers major drug classes with documented dosing challenges, provides a reliable basis for the implementation of high-throughput TDM, and its application confirmed the clinical impact of TDM in a real-world setting.PMID:38677452 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2024.119690 (Source: International Journal of Clinical Chemistry)

Pityriasis lichenoides: assessment of 41 pediatric patients
CONCLUSIONS: The clinical form most commonly found was PLC mainly in schoolchildren and adolescents. The frequency peaks coincided with infectious outbreaks. The remission rate was satisfactory with antibiotic therapy, but higher with phototherapy. Remission was greater in patients with disease onset after 5 years of age.PMID:38677323 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2024.03.011 (Source: Jornal de Pediatria)

Site and duration of abdominal pain discriminate symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease from previous diverticulitis patients
AbstractAbdominal pain in patients with diverticular disease (DD) can be challenging in clinical practice. Patients with symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease (SUDD) and patients with a previous acute diverticulitis (PD) may share a similar clinical pattern, difficult to differentiate from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We used standardized questionnaires for DD (short and long lasting abdominal pain) and IBS (following Rome III Criteria) to assess clinical features of abdominal pain, in terms of presence, severity and length, in SUDD and PD patients. One hundred and forty-eight SUDD and 118 PD patients completed...

PCR-positive meningococcal CSF infection without pleocytosis but high IL-6 and IL-8
ConclusionsWe present a rare case of meningococcal infection of the CSF in a SLE patient without further CSF abnormalities. We discuss the involvement of early antibiotic treatment and the role of the patient ’s immune status in the normal CSF findings of this case. Moreover, this case demonstrates the importance of early antibiotic therapy in bacterial meningitis for the clinical outcome. (Source: Infection)

The straight and narrow: A game theory model of broad- and narrow-spectrum empiric antibiotic therapy
Math Biosci. 2024 Apr 24:109203. doi: 10.1016/j.mbs.2024.109203. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhysicians prescribe empiric antibiotic treatment when definitive knowledge of the pathogen causing an infection is lacking. The options of empiric treatment can be largely divided into broad- and narrow-spectrum antibiotics. Prescribing a broad-spectrum antibiotic increases the chances of covering the causative pathogen, and hence benefits the current patient's recovery. However, prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics also accelerates the expansion of antibiotic resistance, potentially harming future patients. We analyze the...

Primary cutaneous nocardiosis of the ankle caused by N. brasiliensis: a case report
We present a 67-year-old woman who developed abscesseson the back of her right ankle after walking barefoot on soil. Cultures from the cutaneous lesions grewN. brasiliensis. Antibiotic therapy with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole given for a month provided near-complete resolution of her lesions. (Source: Infection)

Case Report: Extensive Osteomyelitis of the Craniofacial Skeleton Following Operative Fracture Treatment
AbstractOsteomyelitis is a bone inflammation caused by an infectious microorganism, which may lead to complete structure decay. Over time, along with the discovery and usage of powerful antibiotics, it became a rare occurrence in modern practice. In this paper, we will present a case of a patient with craniofacial osteomyelitis, which occurred as a complication of previous trauma and incomplete surgical treatment, due to lack of compliance. Chronic diseases in the non-cooperative patient led to the development of a severe clinical state. We believe that the existence of communication between defects on the anterior wall of...
