Use of a 5-Item Modified Frailty Index for Assessing Outcomes After Hartmann's Reversal: An ACS-NSQIP Study
DISCUSSION: An mFI-5 of ≥2 was associated with greater morbidity, mortality, and eLOS following Hartmann's reversal. However, there were no mortality or eLOS differences in patients with an mFI-5 of 1 and only a 14% increase in any morbidity, making these patients potentially good candidates for Hartmann's reversal. Furthermore, laparoscopic surgery was associated with a protective effect for overall morbidity and eLOS, potentially mitigating some of the risk associated with higher frailty scores.PMID:37978813 | DOI:10.1177/00031348231216483 (Source: The American Surgeon)

Pharmaceutical agents as potential drivers in the development of Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer: A Case-Control Study
CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis suggests that the development of EOCRC may be correlated with prior use of specific medications. Additional analyses should be employed to validate the results. The mechanism of action inducing EOCRC by candidate pharmaceutical agents will then need to be determined.PMID:37933755 | DOI:10.2196/50110 (Source: Cancer Control)

Valerenic acid reduces anxiety-like behavior in young adult, female (C57BL/6J) mice
Behav Brain Res. 2023 Oct 16:114717. doi: 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114717. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExtracts from the plant Valeriana officinalis are marketed as an herbal remedy to treat anxiety and insomnia. Valerenic acid (VA) is a major chemical component of Valeriana extracts. To date, there is relatively little information about how VA affects behavior. The purpose of these experiments was to (1) test whether administration of VA induces measurable changes in anxiety-like, depression-like, or locomotor behaviors; (2) determine whether the effects of VA on behavior are dose-dependent; and (3) compare the effects of VA ...

Decentralizing cancer care in sub-Saharan Africa through an integrated regional cancer centre model: The case of Kenya
This study aimed to analyze the status of the utilization of services at regional cancer centers. We analyzed data from the district health information system, focusing on patient demographics, visit type, cancer stage, and the type of treatment provided. For comparison, a trend analysis of new cancer cases recorded at the main national referral hospital between 2011-2021 was also conducted. We conducted a descriptive analysis of the variables of interest; the median was used to summarize continuous variables and percentages were used for categorical variables. A total of 29,321 patients visited the regional centers in 202...

Membrane regulation of 15LOX-1/PEBP1 complex prompts the generation of ferroptotic signals, oxygenated PEs
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Sep 5:S0891-5849(23)00613-5. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.09.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFerroptosis is a regulated form of cell death, the mechanism of which is still to be understood. 15-lipoxygenase (15LOX) complex with phosphatidylethanolamine (PE)-binding protein 1 (PEBP1) catalyzes the generation of pro-ferroptotic cell death signals, hydroperoxy-polyunsaturated PE. We focused on gaining new insights into the molecular basis of these pro-ferroptotic interactions using computational modeling and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry experiments. Simulations of 15LOX-1/PEBP1 comp...
