PLA2G6 guards placental trophoblasts against ferroptotic injury [Applied Biological Sciences]
The recently identified ferroptotic cell death is characterized by excessive accumulation of hydroperoxy-arachidonoyl (C20:4)- or adrenoyl (C22:4)- phosphatidylethanolamine (Hp-PE). The selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) inhibits ferroptosis, converting unstable ferroptotic lipid hydroperoxides to nontoxic lipid alcohols in a tissue-specific manner. While placental oxidative stress and lipotoxicity are hallmarks of placental... (Source: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences)

Molecules, Vol. 25, Pages 5067: Extraction of Inulin from Andean Plants: An Approach to Non-Traditional Crops of Ecuador
Jaramillo Inulin is a polysaccharide of fructose widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industry due to its physicochemical properties and technological applications. Inulin from jicama (Smallanthus sonchifolius) and cabuya (Agave americana) was obtained. The steps for inulin obtention were: raw material preparation, extraction and purification. The extraction conditions were determined using a random design with three levels of stirring speed (0, 130 and 300 rpm), and a 32 factorial experimental design with three levels of temperature (40, 60 and 80 °C) and solid:liquid ratio (1:2, 1:3 and 1:5 S:L). Th...

The Critical Role of Pulmonary Artery Wedge Pressure Saturation In The Standardization of Pulmonary Artery Wedge Pressure Measurement
Inadequate balloon occlusion while measuring pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) during right heart catheterization (RHC) may lead to inaccurate measures and clinically relevant misdiagnosis of disease. Following the 6th World Symposium on Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) recommendations, we instituted a standard of care clinical protocol at the Medical University of South Carolina that required obtaining a PAWP saturation (sat) to confirm complete occlusion whenever initially measured PAWP is>15 mmHg. Management of Nonoperative Diverticulitis : Is Surgical Admission Always Best?
CONCLUSION: Institutional policy mandating admissions for patients receiving nonoperative management of diverticulitis to surgical services does not reduce hospital LOS or cost. This argues that admission to medical services may be an acceptable practice. This raises the question, is acute diverticulitis always a surgical issue? Lysocardiolipin acyltransferase regulates NSCLC cell proliferation and migration by modulating mitochondrial dynamics [Lipids]
In this study, in silico analysis of TCGA lung cancer data sets revealed a significant increase in LYCAT expression, which was later corroborated in human lung cancer tissues and immortalized lung cancer cell lines via indirect immunofluorescence and immunoblotting, respectively. Stable knockdown of LYCAT in NSCLC cell lines not only reduced CL and increased monolyso-CL levels but also reduced in vivo tumor growth, as determined by xenograft studies in athymic nude mice. Furthermore, blocking LYCAT activity using a LYCAT mimetic peptide attenuated cell migration, suggesting a novel role for LYCAT activity in promoting NSCL...

Molecules, Vol. 25, Pages 4212: Field-Scale Evaluation of Botanical Extracts Effect on the Yield, Chemical Composition and Antioxidant Activity of Celeriac (Apium graveolens L. Var. rapaceum)
szula Piszcz The use of higher plants for the production of plant growth biostimulants is receiving increased attention among scientists, farmers, investors, consumers and regulators. The aim of the present study was to examine the possibility of converting plants commonly occurring in Europe (St. John’s wort, giant goldenrod, common dandelion, red clover, nettle, valerian) into valuable and easy to use bio-products. The biostimulating activity of botanical extracts and their effect on the chemical composition of celeriac were identified. Plant-based extracts, obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction an...
