Chitosan based encapsulation of Valeriana officinalis essential oil as edible coating for inhibition of fungi and aflatoxin B < sub > 1 < /sub > contamination, nutritional quality improvement, and shelf life extension of Citrus sinensis fruits
In this study, a novel chitosan nanoemulsion coating embedded with Valeriana officinalis essential oil (Ne-VOEO) was synthesized in order to improve the postharvest quality of Citrus sinensis fruits against infesting fungi, and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) mediated nutritional deterioration. The developed nanoemulsion was characterized through SEM, FTIR, XRD, and DLS analyses. The nanoemulsion showed controlled delivery of VOEO responsible for effective inhibition of Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, A. versicolor, Penicillium italicum, and Fusarium oxysporum growth at 6.5, 5.0, 4.0, 5.5, and 3.5 μL/mL, respectively and AFB1 productio...

New iridoids from Patrinia scabiosaefolia and their hypoglycemic effects by activating PI3K/Akt signaling pathway
Fitoterapia. 2023 Jan 3;165:105423. doi: 10.1016/j.fitote.2022.105423. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGrowing in regions of Asia and North America, Patrinia scabiosaefolia is a wild vegetable and herb that has demonstrated health-promoting properties. Iridoids are one of the most bioactive phytochemicals in P. scabiosaefolia but the in-depth study is scarce. Herein we reported the separation and characterization of nine iridoids (compounds 1-9) from P. scabiosaefolia, and two compounds (2 and 6) were new. All the structures of the nine iridoids were characterized and confirmed with NMR (1D & 2D), HRMS, IR and UV. Compou...

Genetic and Chemical Diversity of Commercial Japanese Valerian
Chem Pharm Bull (Tokyo). 2022;70(12):840-847. doi: 10.1248/cpb.c22-00105.ABSTRACTIn order to investigate the relationship between the chemical composition of essential oils and haplotypes of the psbA-trnH intergenic spacer region of chloroplast DNA (psbA-trnH) in Valerianae Fauriei Radix (Japanese Valerian; JV), we analyzed the DNA sequence and GC-MS metabolome of JV from Japanese markets and of herbal specimens from related species. DNA analysis revealed that JV products from Japan consisted of three haplotypes, namely AH-1, -2 and -5 reported in our previous study. The GC-MS metabolome revealed five chemotypes (J1, J2, C...
