Impact of Preoperative Factors in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) on Length of Stay: An IBD-NSQIP Collaborative Analysis
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients are challenging to manage perioperatively due to disease complexity and multiple comorbidities. This retrospective multicenter database study aims to assess factors associated with extended length of stay in post-surgical IBD patients. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Cell-free multi-enzyme synthesis and purification of uridine diphosphate galactose
Chembiochem. 2021 Oct 12. doi: 10.1002/cbic.202100361. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHigh costs and low availability of UDP-galactose hampers the enzymatic synthesis of valuable oligosaccharides such as human milk oligosaccharides. Here, we report the development of a platform for the scalable, biocatalytic synthesis and purification of UDP-galactose. UDP-galactose was produced with a titer of 48 mM (27.2 g/L) in a small-scale batch process (200 µL) within 24 h using 0.02 g enzyme /g product . Through in-situ ATP regeneration, the amount of ATP (0.6 mM) supplemented was around 240-fold lower than the stoichiometric equiva...

Medicinal Plants for the Treatment of Mental Diseases in Pregnancy: An In Vitro Safety Assessment
This study suggests that all tested preparations from St. Johnʼs wort, California poppy, valerian, lavender, and hops, in concentrations up to 30 µg/mL, do not possess any cytotoxic or genotoxic potential and do not compromise placental cell viability, metabolic activity, and differentiation. Empirical and clinical studies during pregnancy are needed to support these in vitro data. Use of Herbal Medicines for the Treatment of Mild Mental Disorders and/or Symptoms During Pregnancy: A Cross-Sectional Survey
Little is known about the treatment of mild mental disorders and/or symptoms (MDS) during pregnancy. Our main purpose was to compare the use of herbal medicines during pregnancy in women with and without MDS. A questionnaire consisting of 21 multiple-choice questions was distributed in the participating obstetrics clinics or birth centers in the Canton of Zurich, in Switzerland, from August 2018 to March 2019; 398 questionnaires were considered in the analysis. The use of any type of herbal medicines–including pharmaceutical herbal products as well as teas–during pregnancy was reported by 358 women (out of 398, 89.9%)....

Valerian treatment during the postpartum period alters breast milk composition and impairs long-term memory in female rat offspring
This study investigated the effects of valerian treatment in postpartum rats on maternal care, toxicity, and milk composition. Postnatal development, memory, and anxiety behavior in the offspring were also assessed. Postpartum Wistar rats received the valerian (500, 1000, or 2000 mg·kg-1·day-1) by oral gavage. Clinical and biochemical toxicity was evaluated with commercial kits. Maternal behavior was observed daily. Milk composition was analyzed by colorimetric methods. Physical and neuromotor tests were used to analyze postnatal development. Anxiolytic activity was assessed by the elevated plus maze, and memory was eval...
